Default thoughts on comm lathes

..Could any of you give me some input on comm lathes? Mainly, which ones should I stay away from, and what does it mean when you can turn stock only or mod only armatures? Last, how critical is having a diamond cutter over a carbide cutter?

I think that's all.

Thanks for any advice on these.
