Tyre Inserts, How To Choose?
 

At WLRC people seem to recommend HPI yellow inserts (Soft) etc with the tyres we use, CS22's etc.

But when reading 'generic' information regarding inserts they mention things like the harder the tyre the softer the insert, and softer suspension = harder insert.

This has been remedied at National level by the competitors only being allowed to use premounted tyres.

How do you guys choose, are there any general 'rule of thumb's you would follow?

me would use either
24mm rims (used to use 26mm inch ups but protoform stopped making them )
Hara blacks (very good insert, Med) some guy`s used grey`s ,but they were soft, to soft for me )
yoko 38m is a real winner

but i allways use HARA v2 Black from now on on amy compound tyre ,coz i know them ,cheap from Hong Kong ;)

What do you find 'wrong' with the soft inserts?

do you know when you find something & it doesn`t `feel` right

this is what i had with soft inserts
used fade off towards end of race ,feel sluggish in transition & a bit of a dead fell to them
but as soon as i used eother yok 38m or hara blacks fine hunky dorie

yes you can tune the chassis to the insert/tyre combobut i couldn`t be arsed
i just found a good combo & stayed with it ,then the chassis tune will play catch up
but if you keep changing wheel combo`s your forever going round in circles trying to make them work

by the way
HPI `soft ` might be yok`s med or hara black or vice versa

And this is why it went preglued this year to even the playing field in the nat`s to take the guess work out of inserts/wheel/tyre battle

I also use the HPI inserts for quite some time now, they seem to be of a higher quality than the inserts used in the pre glued CS27.
Range:
Yellow = Soft
Orange = Med Soft
Red = Medium
Green = Medium Hard
Blue = Hard

For outdoor asphalt racing, on a track were a lot of nitro people run, my general rule of thumb is (with CS-27)

The hotter it is, the harder the insert I choose.
The colder, the softer the insert.
Laptimes remain +/- same.
Usually I'm playing with Red and Green, sometimes I use the blue ones, Yellow & Orange I almost never use...

May sound strange to some of you but the tyres squeel a lot less using this rule and in my experience excessive squeeling = loosing grip = loosing time
