Cool, that's what I was expecting it to do. I'm glad to hear it, I'm going to have to put the Novak back in once the carpet season picks up to keep peace with the locals.

I'm really curious about how this Orion is going to feel, it's got a giant air gap compared to the other two. I'm guessing more RPM, lower torque.

from what i've seen from locals runnng the orion 10.5, it's got a lot more torque than the novak 10.5 and needs to run a lower FDR. it also sounds like a dust buster going down the track, gotta love that fan...

side note, my 13.5 with the new rotor was so torquey that at one point i heard my front spool slipping under hard acceleration. un-surprisingly, it sounded a lot like an off-road slipper "barking". i tightened it up and it went away.

Hey Marcos, I had to dremel some of the rear arm mount behind the motor so I could get a big enough pinion on the Orion 13.5. Orion's motors are at their full circumference from end to end (unlike Novak and LRP that dip in toward the rear plate) and it hits the mount with 47/118. So, we can be ghetto brothers now.

Is 118 the smallest kevlar gear? That's really way too big for 13.5.
yeap i had to grind mine too , have you tried a 112 spur yet ? no problem with the getto look what ever works!

Bryan,

I will be running tupe R at Carpet Wars in stock.
Waiting for one-way to turn up, then will do some testing
before the first C.W. meeting.

i geared it at 108/47 FDR 4.2ish. 47 was the largest spur available at the track. i wanted to run 100/47, but couldn't get the pinion and spur to mesh . guess i've got to grind out my motor mount slots or something.
WOW! As I was thinking about running a 13.5 this season, is the FDR 4.2 a good starting point? Seems very low, as that FDR is a far cry from the manual recommendation. (128/42 for the Novak 13.5) Is this on foam? rubber? What are the motor temps after a run?

that ratio is for a rubber tire car, medium sized track, faily technical layout. that ratio will only work with the new 13mm rotor. the rotor that comes with the 13.5 pro won't hold up to that. i was running the standard rotor at 4.9 on the same track.

i would've geared lower, closer to 4.0, but i couldn't get the right gear combination to physically mesh up. i need to get some much larger pinions for that to work out.

He's running the new 13mm rotor which requires more gear. In general, though, the 13.5 needs a ton.

Which kind of makes me wonder why there's not a smaller kevlar spur available. A 108 and 100 would be nice. A few tweaks (revised rear arm mounts or motor plate?) would be nice, too. 13.5's seem to be popular enough to justify some tweaks to accommodate them. With the larger rotors coming into favor, and the absurd gears required, it might be something worth considering.

when the jrx-s came out and the tooling for these spurs was made, i don't think we had a need to be able to gear from 4.0 to 11.0.

Maybe not, but it's not like they haven't had plenty of time to see it coming. I don't mean to be critical of Losi, but we're basically at a point where we can't effectively use 13.5 motors (especially on foams) without using aftermarket gears. That seems like a hole that needs to be plugged.

If needed you could also use 41tooth diff gears and change the internal to 1.79....i know its only a little bit, but it could help.

I had just as much motor as Terry running the novak 10.5 and he had thermal issues last time, I ran the crap out of it geared where the good drivers gear them because they can drive really smooth, I came off the track at 123 deg

So I love my orion! And yeah it does sound kinda cool, yet weird lol

And it doesnt need more gear, Vill said he was running 5.1, and Scotty, Ramon, said gear the orion 5.1, and I geared it at 5.2 because thats the most gear I had, and didnt mess with timing

you will love it!
