Well I am ready to get into racing finally(see some of my recent posts), and am accumulating the needed tools and parts to be competitive. Now, I am ready to get the car to compete with. Right now I am running a TA04R at the Tamiya Aliso track. Obviously it is pretty much out paced by the TA05s that run there. My question is, should I bypass the GT2 class and go straight to GT1? Either class means I am buying a new car (TA05 or 415MSX). When you add in all the hopups for the 05, it is about the same price as the 415. My question is should I take the time to start at the lower level and learn how the racing works, or would I be able to go to GT1?

buy a mini and have fun and learn a lot more before going to the gt1 class for sure or keep what you have and get all you can out of it ......

you still can be competitive in the lower classes with the ta04r.

TQ qualifier for GT3 at last years qualifier was a TA04r. Probably because no TAO5 yet. but still time were good.

The guys at the track will be happy to give you info on how to set this car up.

I am competing this year again in GT3 with a tbo2, which as the car to beat 3 years ago. I will move up to Gt2 or 1 when Tamiya releases a racing version of the TA05.

I would suggest GT3, Gt2 would be like racing sportsman stock at SOCAl, Most should be in expert stock. GT1 if you are an expert, go ahead. These are some of the fastest drivers around competing in this class. Don't get me wrong, in GT3 the fasted times would qualify for GT2!! That is with a silver can mabuchi or johnson.

The only reason I am evne considering a step to GT1 is because of the fact I have a good deal on a 415MSX, and because I have been racing at the Tamiya track for about 6 years now. I wouldn't consider myself pro because I have always been doing this on a very slim budget. Now that I am concentrating on r/c, I just need to decide what to do.

I do have a mini I was planning to run as well. I got a new Suzuki Swift kit I want to run. I have loaded it up already. The new suspension is really nice too if you haven't seen one yet.

GT1 would be a good consideration for you because after TCS.. you still have a car that is very competitive at any track you go to. GT2 might be a better fit speed wise (not sure what motors you run) and equipment wise since a stock motor wont eat up tires or batteries as fast as a 19T.

GT3 is just plain fun! BUT... running GT2 and GT3 will hinder you to only racing that particular chassis for TCS. its pretty hard to go to socal and run stock with a TB-02 or with a TA05. its possible.. but you'd be more competitive with an MSX.

Mini is also very popular at Socal.... lots of things to consider. Good luck!
