I know 1/12th scale needs another class liek a hole in the head.....but this thing is just awesome. Next level up from the Kyosho fantom.

I don't need this, but I sure do want it. Too many cool cars, not enough time/money.

Why would it need a new class? Almost every 1/12 rule set around the world allows just about anything as long as it fits under a 1/12 body and if it fits the spec wheels used at particular race meetings. The front wheels are the only sticking point there, but not every race meeting uses spec tyres. What's more likely to limit its sales is the $650 price tag.

The defacto rulesets applied generally in North America follow the ROAR specified (8.7.3.5 Rear suspension and drive: Single, one-piece drive axle only) for 1/12th scale racing.
This would eliminate this chassis from legal competion in any sanctioned or national event.
For IFMAR however, you appear to be correct - according to:
SECTION THREE- TECHNICAL RULES 1/12 3 TECHNICAL RULES 1/12 3.0.0. For 1/12th it is allowed to present two chassis to preliminary technical inspection. Either of these may be used during the event. The second one has to be identical to the first and can be approved anytime during that event.
So technically as long as someone presented 2 chassis at an IFMAR sanctioned event, and they passed "technical inspection" - they could legally compete in 12th scale as it appears IFMAR makes no specific distinction against having more than one driven axle on a pan car?

The Kyosho fantom was not legal back then. We did let it race in a big race but it never finished a race. Back then Big Jim Greenmyer ran it at the Bolink Spring Championships in the modified class (attempted). Back then all we had was 1200 ma Sanyo batteries. It never finished a race as it dumped.

Does 12th indoor need 4wd? Seems like they have almost unlimited grip already. This just adds weight and friction. Might be fun outdoors though!

4WD 12th would be really awesome in GT12-R... obviously we don't need this but 4WD and slippery rubber tires work nicely together.
