Sorry, can't help you much as I've only test driven an XRay a long time ago on asphalt. The other issue is that I usually only race on asphalt. For the most part, to date, I like my Evo5 over my Evo4, Pro4, & TC3. That's about all I can say.

There's an age old question.....

You will have to try to find out.. For you it may be great or it may be crap...

Everyone seems to prefer different cars so give it a go to find out.. I would recommend a 415 series over the evo if you are new to shaft drive.

I`ve ran My Nephew`s - Friend`s X-Ray T2 with a Reedy 19-Turn Motor.....The T2 MOVES!(It turns Well, and it holds a Straight Line better than the Evo 5). The Evo 5 just has better Punch Speed over the T2.
-I`ve set-up his T2; so I know.....but it`s only My opinion.

If you want to use a Low Turn Motor; don`t get the Evo 5.
-I don`t think the Evo 5`s Gears can handle any motor past 19-Turns.....I won`t(wouldn`t) try it.

If you only using a silvercan, then the Evo would certainly be a good bet... certainly as it has a very efficient drivetrain, and you'll be getting the most of the motors power.

Hey C van der Hagen: you use a 7-Turn Motor in your Evo 5?. . . . .You haven`t had any problems with the Gears(Spur, Bevel Gear or Ring Gears)?
-Since you`re running a Low-Turn Motor in your Evo 5; I would like to know how long the Gears can hold-up. . . . .Tell me(us) updates.

They might run the Evo 5 in the 2008 IFMAR Worlds Race.....?

Take Care

Wow; thanks for telling me the Evo 5 can handle Low-Turn Motors. I might use the 10-Turn Reedy Ti Worlds Edition Motor I have here.

No, I highly doubt Tamiya will run EVO5 for a IFMAR race. TRF drivers prefer belt driven cars over shaft driven car.

its awesome to hear how competitive this car is , though we will most likely not be seeing the evo 5 at IFMAR, i would really want to see it there, just to see how it will match up at the high end, and to see does it make the difference between losing/winning.

Since the evo 3... there hasn't really been a shaft car that has been preferred by any of these high end racers... I would like to see the evo 5 "try" (not that it will but at least it could try) and change this perspective, and bring some shafties back into the big races.

In the 2004 IFMAR ISTC, Surikarn made it into A-Main with a EVO4, since then, there are no signs that Tamiya have shaft driven cars in the A-Main.

i currently use my Evo 5's for 540(silver can) and 27T Stock classes. they perform extremely well and are very efficient. the drivetrain is super smooth and very free. i wouldn't run the Evo 5 with any mod motor as i personally feel that it might be a bit too hard for the drivetrain, which will wear prematurely. i am sure that the car will easily handle a mod motor, but will definitely require a bit more maintenance and more frequent brevel and ring gear changes on the front one-way!

im afraid that is not right my friend, i use to run a ta04 before the evo 5 , same motor in both (novak 5.5 BL) , and the reason of getting a shaftie after driving a belt car was indeed the drivetrain , i was sick of changing belts and puleys , the drivetrain of the ta04 has so much friction so belts were eating pulleys and pulleys were eating belts so fast , after i change to evo 5 i didnt change anything of drivetrain except for the spur gear and pinion but that's because i am use the small 64 pitch
