Here is a question doc...once a silver can has been broken in (by someone else)...is all chance of making it scream gone? Or can you still make it sing. I have lots of "old" Johnsons and other than cleaning and maybe zapping them...what else is there? And are your services for hire? lol

Generally speaking...no. If the motor is fairly new and hasn't been abused or overheated, then there is a chance it can be made somewhat faster. Zapping a silver can also magnetizes the arm, so there are tradeoffs (e.g. much less torque).

My services are not for hire, but I do occasionally sell off some older motors that are still in good shape & will be doing so at the C in Frederick MD on September 29th when we race Mini's there. If the TCS series comes to KC in 2008, we can talk then.

Hi Dave
The 4 slotted motor are 2000 or 3000 RPM more compare the two slotted ones....If your running the 4 wd sedan with 4 slotted motor ,don't over gear it will burn the motor really fast....The new J motor silver can have way more torque than the 4 slotted but less RPM....4 slotted motor are great for two wd or mini in most cases..

I break in with 2volt and look inside the can and see if the brushes is full seated on the com.
PS don't break in the J motor in the water too long .cause the J brushes are softer brushes compare the old silver can...

i got a johnson 540 out of an old drill, although it has been used as a drill for 6 years, is it still possible to break it in? or does the breakign in have to be done new? but first i need to find out how to get the gear of the spindle...

Well first of all, look inside the motor ....if you can tell if there any burnt between them...the brushes s/b seated full face on the com. if so ...it's all good....

Yes breaking in the new motor would be better first thing to do...

Got another question for the silver can guru's...What's your preferred choice of product or procedure to clean the motors our without drying the brushes?

Your going to find that all motor sprays will tend to dry out the bushings and brushes just accept it and remember to oil your bushings the night before and right before the race and every time you clean it. I use tribo on my brushes and bushings it works great I wouldn't use anything else.
