Exclamation Wrong soldering=smoke?!?!?!?!?

i was soldering a schottky diode onto my motor.a friend told me the white band end is negative so i did it that way.then i tested it and when i pull the trigger , smoke was belching out!!!!!!
anyway i stopped it and unsoldered/resoldered properly.now it's running fine but i want to know whether is there any damage done?is the diode already blown?is my esc ok?
another question:how many capacitors are really needed?mine came with one presoldered and today i soldered another one from the esc package.some sites say 3 with 1+2serial.is that really necessary?i have 2 parallel now.

Your frined told you wrong - the schotky has the band towards POSITIVE.

You've blown the diode, so it's not doing anything now - I'd get a new one, if the esc recommends a diode is fitted.

If the motor has pre-mounted capacitors, you don't need any more.

You shouldn't have two parallel - it decreases their performance.

Are you running a mod
