Default Quick RC18T gearing question

I just picked up a RC18T FT with a Reedy Mini max motor and was hoping someone could give me a suggestion on gearing. I was looking at Tower Hobbies and it said to change the spur from a 55T to 60T "to prevent overheating" but to do this you have to change the cover too. Can you not just go to a smaller pinion? maybe you wouldn't be able to get the mesh close enough. Thanks for any help.

The newer 18T's all come with the new gear cover. If yours has the brass outdrive sleeves, it probably has the new gear cover. Pretty sure the gear cover will have "MT" or "60" molded into it on the inside if works with the 60 tooth spur. Easy enough to take it off and check..

Smaller pinions would work just fine. There is plenty of adjustment in the motor mount.

you'll want to got with the 60T spur anyway, it only costs about $5 for the new cover and spur together with tax, and it's well worth it.
