Default Transmission break in methods

I have been searching for tips or preferred methods of breaking in a transmission to get the gears rotating freely. I have heard using a wire brush and even toothpaste on the gears. What are your favorite ways to break in a transmission? Forgive me if this has been covered, but I have not been able to find much.

A few drops of very fine lapping compound on the gear set , screw it back together , run it with a drill for a while. Take it apart , clean it up , re assemble . You can get it as free as you like .

If you have a automotive machine shop , they may share some compound with you for , say , a good six pack...

At least 800 or higher . We don't want really aggressive cutting , we just want to ease up the tolerance between the parts a bit and leave a smooth clean finish behind.
