Default 48p vs 32p gears. Noisy 1/10 buggy.

I wanted to try some racing so I left my traxxas roots and picked up a rc10b5 team kit. I finally assembled the thing after watching every asembley tip and trick video I could find. It's noisey. Is it the 48p gears that came with the kit. I normally use 32p and they run smooth as butter. I don't believe it's the gearbox because I lightly coated those gears before assembly.

Check this thread for specific questions. But look at your gear mesh.

32p is quite louder than 48p. I just switched my sc5m and b5 to 32p. They re definitely louder. I just did it because i was tired of handing out 48p pinions at the track and not getting them back. Wont have to worry about people askin to borrow them anymore lol

I've seen 32p gear cars that were silent (6-gear RC10 back in the late 80's) and 48p cars that are noisy (most B4's). The real advantage of 48p is finer gear ratio adjustment, especially in cases where smaller pinions are used.

It's not the pitch, but the material. For example, you can run the factory AE spur and get quite a bit of noise with perfect gear mesh. Swap to the identical spur from kimburough, and get considerably less noise.

That's a good possibility. Those cheapo Robinson pinions are poop. My nearest LHS carries them, so I've had no choice buy to buy them on a few occasions. They're just plain horrible and will look like saw blades in no time.

I generally buy Losi pinions because my second closest LHS carries them. Much better quality and considerably quieter. They last way longer too. I have some Losi pinions that are easily a few years old and still look like new.
