Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Frank, thanks as always for the quick response.

Is your setup that you posted otherwise unchanged (for standup tranny)?

Or have you fiddled with it all? If so, I'd love to see the latest as I'm sure others would.

Has anyone had the chance to try this new piece out yet? Also would you figure it is designed more towards the lay down kit?

Frank has answered it about every page for the last 7 or 8 pages, no it won't work with the stock chassis, that's why there's a specific chassis for the lay down tranny.

Should add that to the first page of posts.

On another note, played around with setup and for OCRC, I'm using Kyosho gild front and TLR LF white springs rear. 1.6x2 front, 1.7x2 rear. My oil is not where it should be, but I suspect I'll end up at 32.5 all around. Currently it's 32.5 f, 35 r.

Default Laydown conversion

I guess i should be a little more speciffic my question wasnt for frank i was aski g if anyone had tried to drill the holes to make the dirt laydown work with the stock chassis like the exotek one does i think it seems silly to buy the full laydown conversion just to use only the chassis and then have to buy another trans i guess i will buy exotek

The chassis flex is completely different. Now the delrin case also makes for a different handling. We can agree that the price makes it hard to buy the kit but when you price out everything, you get a great deal.

Contains:
  • delrin case with adapter
  • idler gear
  • motor plate
  • aluminum hubs
  • chassis
  • carbon battery brace
  • lightweight laydown body

I might be missing stuff but seriously I didnt want to spend it but after spending it I found it worth its price tag. I would like to see a dual purpose chassis and molded cases but I am not sure how it will affect performance in the end. I honestly prefer the dirt transmission case over the +3.5 case for dirt/clay.

I noticed that new part, the +35g Brass Hinge Pin Plate. Is it used for the standard tranny or the laydown one? What about the laydown dirt gearbox?

Essentially yes I guess you could drill the holes to make it work, however running the complete package offered by TLR gives the complete package. I will say doing the complete conversion makes a lot more sense dollar wise like WillS has stated. Just buying a transmission case and idler you are looking at around 100 bucks. For what you get with the conversion; I think it's worth it.

It only fits the standard chassis/gear box. Sorry.

The tranny case to rear tower and motor plate to chassis mount are also needed, and only available in laydown conversion.

Whoa!! You have to buy the lay down conv which is $179 and then buy a different tranny case for another $79?
