Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Even as a long time AE fan, I see some interesting concepts designed into this platform and I'm excited to try it on the track

First race day today with the new car was Fantastic. This car turns in on power so well and puts power down on the straights so predictably i'm amazed. Best results in 3 years. Cheers to Frank Root and the design team. I love my new buggy!

Just finished the build today which went flawless. I toke it out for the first practice run. OMG!!!! This buggy is awesome. My first love is my wife... I just found my second. I could hammer it whenever i wanted. Jumped and turned great.

For your guys running stock. The setup is straight from the manual with the execption i used 32.5 oil in the front shocks. Two upgrades; alum servo horn and carbon front shock tower.

Clay indoor track... medium to high bite
Specs.
17.5 Kill Shot
1258 savox servo
Orion 4500 shorty battery (removed the rear spacer on the battery hold down and push the battery all the way back)
Hobbywing Just Stock esc
Spektrum SR3100 reciever
Dirt Webs front and rear (clay compound)
Weight was 1540. Would like to shave a little off that.

Would like to thank Frank and the TLR team for a great product. Frank, i appreciate you being so active on this forum...thanks. For those AE boys that's coming over.... you won't go back.

My kit arrived this week along with the 2.4" RB6 rear wheels I had ordered. I was able to get the following offset measurements using a digital caliper where the Width was measured on outside wheel edge and Backspace was measured to the flat hex face which would press up against the face of the hex nut on the axle:

TLR (Rear) 2.2": (Width = 38.2mm) (Backspace = 26.6mm) (Offset = (W/2)-B = -7.5mm
RB6 (Rear) 2.4": (Width = 38.8mm) (Backspace = 26.7mm) (Offset = (W/2)-B = -7.3mm

If I understand this correctly, when using the RB6 2.4" wheels, they will add a combined 0.4mm extra track-width on the rear as opposed to using the stock TLR 2.2" wheels.

It's also worth noting that I'll also gain a combined 1.2mm of extra wheel width with the RB6 2.4" wheels which could potentially add more stability.

I also measured the front wheels too:
TLR (Front) 2.2": (Width = 24.6mm) (Backspace = 22.4mm) (Offset = (W/2)-B = -10.1mm
TLR (Front) 2.4": (Width = 25.6mm) (Backspace = 22.5mm) (Offset = (W/2)-B = -9.7mm

So on the front, it seems that the switch to 2.4" wheels will net a combined increase in 0.8mm of track width and 2.0mm extra wheel width.

It appears that switching between 2.2" to 2.4" wheels between front/rear may offer many different tuning options to consider with the varying offset/track-width changes. I would've expected the offsets to remain the same when going from 2.2" to 2.4"... go figure???

These are Kyosho vs. TLR wheels so their offset & bead widths are going to be different. Sub 1mm difference in track width may be undetectable with all the other differences that a larger wheel diameter and different tire attachment method brings.

I was specifically comparing TLR Front 2.2" to TLR Front 2.4" wheels which are farther apart on offset when compared to TLR Rear 2.2" to RB6 Rear 2.4"

I think a 2.0mm difference in track width will certainly be noticeable (at least that's the case in the on-road touring cars that I like to race), however that may be cancelled out with the extra width of the wheels... I'm looking forward to testing all the permutations to see if 2.4" is truly a better idea (or not).

2WD Buggy is a new class to me so I'm looking forward to the experimentation. It almost seems like a no brainer on paper to go with the 2.4" wheels simply because they're wider.

Assuming the available tires are wider at the tread than their 2.2 counterpart. I've found the larger diameter tires to differ in more than just bead diameter. Some have narrower tread, though a larger diameter results in a longer contact patch. Think 29er MTB wheels.

I just found my kit had a tiny packaging issue. In the steering assembly, the .5mm Ackerman shims were switched with the 1.0mm camber shims. Didn't notice until I was about to thread in the camber ball studs with 2.5mm's if shims. It would've been easy to miss.
