Kyosho / XGear springs are more progressive than others to me. They aren't just a flat rate all the way through as they are typically softer initially then get stiffer which is why a lot of people like them. Golds up front are very good most of the time as you can get low speed and high speed but some don't like the rears as they seem to change more depending on how the rear end is reacting.
I've had good success with Gold fronts or a more linear spring and a linear spring out back. Anything like a TLR white/yellow/pink are pretty good depending on grip and layout. Many still run the kit yellow spring.

Looks like Exotek is coming out with a laydown gearbox conversion set for the 3.0 that uses the current chassis setup:

I have been using two of the Losi gear differentials from the old RTR. I finally decided to order two of the Serpent diffs. Just put one together. Normally I like to recommend the manufacturer's parts, but when it comes to the gear diff, do yourself a favor and just get the Serpent from the beginning. Twice the price, but it is such a nicer and way smoother unit. No notchy feeling at all. Goes together much easier and the gears are molded or cut with higher precision.
