Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Anyone running the exotek laydown w/ the xfactory rear tower? I'd like to see a pic of your rear tower and how you fit/dremeled the CF brace around the exotek case.

Thanks

I am wondering the same thing. That is why I was interested in the one I saw Kevin (TLR team manager) was running on his car because it did not mount to the aluminum piece that the gearbox attaches to like the X-factory brace. So it would work perfectly with the exotek gearbox. I will see if I can get a picture posted.

Thanks for the pic. Is that just another rear tower (cut up a little?)

So is the consensus that the exotek laydown will not work at all with the xfactory CF rear brace? I really want to run the rear shocks on the front, but I'm not gonna shell out the money for the TLR laydown since I already have the exotek.

Happy to report that the CF rear brace works just fine with the exotek laydown! You do have to dremel off the bottom holes and widen the opening, but it wasn't hard. It's not perfect, but really happy with how mine turned out. The one negative is the spur cover will not fit without hitting the shock spring, so that is a bummer. Other than that, looks great. Can't wait to try it at the track.

There is definitely one coming.... Im racing a 3.0 chassis from a friend. Nobody wants a 3.0 when then 4.0 is around the corner.... Some of my sources say 1-2 months....

Couple of quick questions. The setup sheet says Ackermann ball stud low mount or standard. I have the tlr aluminum steering rack. Ackermann spacers would be behind the inner tie-rod ball? Lastly bump steer spacers would be under the outer tie-rod ball stud? Thanks in advance

Has anyone found when cleaning with simple green 50% and 50% water your screws begin to rust a bit?
I always wipe on and use a dry rag to wipe off.
Thanks

That would make it one of the shortest TLR car life times at 1.5 years.

I stand by my comment I made many pages ago. The new car, if there is one, will use the existing platform with the lay down tranny and other improvements.

To add to this... Here is a convo I had with Frank Root trying to track down some laydown parts.

Oh shoot dangit!!

And the laydown kit is on back order or not being made anymore as the rumors fly about a 4.0 buggy, haha...

Please Let me know if I will be able to order a laydown kit soon, I feel as if my driving is ready for it.

Just moved up to the 13.5 Pro stock class.

Thank You very much again,

John

Not that motor, but I run a VST2 and gear 35/70 and it comes off the track just warm to the touch. It's torquey. I'd start lower, the ultimate being newer is probably set up with more timing.

Those motors require a lower gearing then most stock motors. 28/29 pinion with a 69/70 spur.

A 4.0 will be interesting. But have to say my 3.0 w/laydown and exotek rear shock brace is money on carpet right now. Car is hard to beat.
