Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

Yep my losi with the exotek is much more stable than the b6 and xray cars currently. The b6 hasnt had much setup time so im sure they will get better but i think the dirt transmission (the exotek is near identical to it) is a huge plus to have. I just wish we could get the dirt version at a better price.

My dilemma. I need a second car to run on a very groomed indoor track. I have alot in to my 3.0 for the out doors. I have a 22 2.0 But from the looks of a laydown conversion and a dirt kit plus all the bs to convert a 2.0 or the big cost of a 3.0. How do you guys think this compare to 309.00 for a b6 Opinions please

Just dropped the exotek in my 22 3.0 it added about 30g to car I didnt need to make any set up changes
Steering is a little sharper better on power for sure and rear still feels planted
Lap times about .125 less but the big thing was I drove the car more consistent so that alone I hope will be faster so for $79 I think it was a good deal.
But your still looking at around $400 for the TLR
Guys at my track are running the b6d but then dropping in the lay down so its still around $400
I also have a Schumacher KF2 -Se
Its also $400 and its bad to the bone I love that buggy maybe check one out

if you have a 2.0, i dont think it would be much to convert it to a 3.0laydown...side gaurds, front arms, rear arms, shocktower etc...and of course the laydown kit...

The B6D can be had for $285 (tower/Amain) to $309.95 (full price).

The laydown kit is $28.

This puts the range at $313 to $337.95.

Just wondering if the exotek conversion is similar to the tlr dirt laydown? Or is it closer to the tlr carpet laydown?

This is the 22 3.0 dilemma. Three months ago, a b5 was $250 (about) + $200 for a WWHD laydown, putting you at $450ish for a dirt chassis, with a laydown tranny.

The TLR laydown conversion was a fantastic deal in comparison. For $30 less than a WWHD laydown, you got a high quality laydown, a lawydown-spec chassis, alum hubs, arms, etc. What a deal! For just a little more total than the b5 setup you had a more purposebuilt laydown car. The base 22 3.0 was of course more than the b5.

Fast forward to now, and AE offers you a standup/lawydown combo for a bit more than $100 less than TLR's option ($460 vs $340).

That being said . . . I prefer the TLR car's driving on clay than any of the AE cars that I've borrowed.

The b6 is undoubtedly a good car, but I doubt it's going to feel that much better to me than the b5 or better than the TLR.

i bought 2 3.0s at $330 a piece 4 months ago. now they come out with the laydown kit for another $200 making the kit $530 befor puting in electronics. Associated kit is $309 and you can change the transmissions out very cheap. Why couldnt losi make the laydown transmission work on the kit chassis? Time to go back to associated

Any one know what size motor fans fit inside the front left part of the chassis?

Because it required additional holes in the chassis for the waterfall since it is farther forward.

If you need to have the laydown transmission in your car, look into the Exotek conversion. People at my track are having success with it.

Can we stop the price comparisons with the B6? Seriously. We all know what each rig costs. TLR has to make their business decision on what makes sense for them. We can hope they offer a "3.1" that's laydown out of the box, but in the end they have to decide what makes the most sense for them and most of their customers. I personally know a guy about to get the B6, despite all his other rigs being TLR, because he's currently got a 22 2.0 and the B6 gets him where he wants to be for our carpet track with less cash. It's the way it is. We can clamor all we want, but I don't think it's going to help.

I must be confused. You bought 2 3.0 at $330 x 2 = $660. The laydown is $200 ($179 @ horizon) for 1 car = $530 for 1 car. You already owned the car so in reality it is only a $180 to put a lay down in one of the cars you already owned. Now you want to spend another $309 + $35 =$344 or so for a B6 and laydown. Isn't it a lot less $ to stay with tlr

Yeah the car plus the laydown conversion is pricey for sure. But now they have the dirt conversion laydown so that's another 80 bucks on top of the car and conversion. I did go ahead and get all of it. Why because I like the 3.0. Haven't ran it yet in laydown. I also bought a b6d with the laydown conversion. I'm gonna test them back to back this weekend. But I will say the 3.0 to me anyways is higher quality car. I'm sure tlr will listen and offer a chassis that fits every configuration. I guess my biggest complaint is the cost of the dirt laydown price. 80 bucks seems high for a motor plate and a gear box
