Need esc/motor help for RC10B5/ getting back into the hobby
I’m getting back into the hobby after an almost three year hiatus. I’m now married and cannot, if I want to stay married, invest near what I had into the hobby before. I’ve decided to jump into 1/10 2wd buggy and I’m looking for some advice on an esc and motor. Before I had tekin in everything after a bad experience with novak and I never had any problems with them. (3 RX8’s and 1 rs pro) Now I’m on a budget, first thing I have noticed are the significant price increases. I want a good reliable esc, and I have tried exhaustively to research all of them, just when I think I’m set I read a whole slew of bad things. I understand most people are going to come to the forums for negatives or problems over positives, so I try to take it with a grain of salt. When I was last in, hobbywing was getting a lot of talk, now it is at a premium, oh yeah and savox servos used to be reasonable too. I would like to try to stay around $200 for esc/motor combo, part of me think I should just stick with what I know and get the tekin combo and be done with it, but from talk a lot of people seem to claim other esc’s are smother or have better brakes ,etc.
This will be going in an Associated RC10B5 which will be ran primarily on an outdoor 1/8 track and occasionally 1/10 indoor carpet, I’m thinking of maybe 9.5-10.5t motor. I also want it to be sensored.
Here is a list of esc’s I have considered.
Tekin RS Pro Gen2/motor $249.99 (coupon $225) 8.5t motor limit
Tekin RSX/and motor $329.97 (coupon $299.97)
Hobbywing Xerun SCT Pro $89.00
SpeedPassion Reventon Pro 1.1 $99 combo with competition V3.0 motor $129
LRP Flow Works Team with vector X20 Stock Spec 10.5t $182.99 (coupon $ 167.99)
I appreciate the help guys!

Take a look at the Hobbywing Xerun V3.1 Stock Spec, the name is deceiving but it has all the timing and boost profiles of the V3.1 and a 5.5T motor limit. It is also quite a bit cheaper than the V3.1 as well.

I have a Turnigy Trackstar 100A in my SCT (~$50-$60) and it works great but last time I checked they were sold out (About 2 weeks ago). I'm considering that for my 22 or I will go with Speed Passion Revention R. Just started doing research on that one. Tekin is too much money for me.
Oh and I'm married too and understand your pain with the budget lol. I also have 3 kids so the budget seems to get tighter and tighter lol.

I second the Hobbywing 3.1 stock. I have several and they are awesome. At $130 shipped from ebay they are a bargain. Hobbywing makes Orion speedos and many others too. They are top quality and I feel that they are grossly underrated in terms of power output. If you going to run a 17.5 or 13.5 the Hobbywing Justock is $50 and is really good. I also use the LRP Flow and the Orion R10 pros....all very good. In comparison to the other stuff I'm not a huge Tekin fan although I will always give them a nod for their awesome customer service. The Tekin issue is that I like the other speedos more than I'm loyal to tekin for their service.

That will depend on what classes are run at your local tracks. 17.5 is considered stock class and anything less than that is mod. A 13.5 or 10.5 will be decent in the mod class while you are getting used to it all again, and you can always add a little bit of boost for the straightaway speed as you progress. Reedy Sonic motors are very good as well. Hobbywing also makes good motors if you wanted to keep it in the same family (if you go with the V3.1).

Turnigy TrackStar from Hobbyking.
120A Turbo ESC $48
Programming Box $9
TrackStar 9.5T Motor $38
I was looking for a cheap way to get into 1/10 2WD buggy without breaking the bank and couldn't find a cheaper way. And it keeps up fine with the fast guys at the local track, if only I could drive it better.
Turnigy Ultimate 90C battery was the most at $65.

.....another thing about Hobbywing. Ron Shurr of Shurrspeed is now working for Hobbywing in the US. I think he has a lot to do with their new stuff being so good too. I'm sure he has helped with their new line of motors. All that being said I have found the new Trinity motors to be outstanding. With mod it doesn't really matter what motor. A trackstar would be as good as anything else. Once you get faster than 13.5 they are all fast enough.

Any experience with smc lipos, or Vant batery I've seen those on ebay, or spc lipos?

SMC makes the absolute best lipo you can get for the money and they are here in the US. We've tested a lot of cells and the only ones that I've ever seen with lower IR are the Trinity's that cost 3x as much. There's not much of a debate with this one....

Yeah been trying to look for lipos now. I'm looking for shorty's since I will be able to use those in my SC10 as well. I used turnigy and gens ace in the past, never puffed a gens ace, had some puffing with turnigy though. Gens ace is out of stock. How is the ship time from hobbyking's US wharehouses?

I've been using Turnigy li-po's in airplanes for years and never had a problem, so far I've only used them in cars for about 2 months or so and still haven't had a problem. (I'm using the 5200mah 65c saddle packs and the 6400mah 90c square packs)
