What size pinion gear should i use for my t3? The motor is a 27 turn SIB epic dual Stack. The spur gear is a 87t 48 p. The hobby shop told me to use a 22 but i wasnt sure.

It all depends on the size of the tires as well.

I would try the gearing that came with it. Since we don't have to much information on what you want to do with it, we can't really give you an exact gear ratio. 22 sounds right, but if your hitting top end too fast try a 23 or a 24. If your motor gets hot or your not getting enough acceleration, try a 21 or a 20. Don't drop a large number of teeth at one time, because you might accidently go right past your "sweet spot."

Just a suggestion here..

If you plan on running in the yard (short grass) I would gear 17t-19t pinion.

If you plan on running out in an open space (parking lot,street...large soccer field perhaps) I would gear 20t-21t

As Platinum mentioned....all motors have a sweet spot...

It is always best to undergear than to overgear and overheat the motor..

Make sure the motor is clean and free is debris after you run outdoors...especially in grass..

I have a B4, quite similar to the T3 (bleh, okay, so it's not too similar) But I'd suggest with almost any motor you're going to put in it is 23T pinion. You have an 83T spur gear from what I read, so it's not too far off from the B4's 81 tooth, though the B4's diff gears and all are way different. I'm not 100% certain for your personal results. I find that 23T has an excellent balance of top and low end.

I don't think you can really compare a truck and buggy for gearing. The trucks weigh more. And the B4-T4 have different gear ratios also which will throw everything off.

first of all a 23 barely fits. i would start out with a 18 and go up form there. is this the roar stock motor. what col,or is the can. i would not go over a 20 with any stock motor in a t3 even in oval this si all with a 87 spur

Are you sure the B4 and the T4 have different final gear ratios? I always thought the trannsmissions were the same. The other thing that throws the gears off is the tire size, which I mentioned earlier.

I should be handed a penalty for gearing anyway, since where I race, we run Monster Stocks and P2K2's with 32/84 on either foams tires, or 2.2" rubbers. The Pro-Stock Stampede class isn't an easy class. I run a Bandit , and some rin Rustlers. It's all about raw speed, at any cost. The motors are hot off the track, but we take good care of them and rebuild after every couple of runs. The brushes usually last, but the comms get pretty ugly sometimes. It's not easy being a stock motor pushing a Traxxas "sled" 35MPH.
