Default Sensorless???

Hello everyone,
Just curious if it is possible to run a sensored motor with a sensorless esc?

From what I've read, some work fine but others not so much.

some escs (mainly novak, viper, and LRP) rely on the hall sensor to work, without it plugged in it will not run the motor. other escs will work fine without the hall sensor plugged in. a sensored and a sensor less motor are the same except for the hall sensor. either should work fine with a sensor less esc. just don't run the sensor wire.

If you state your motor and ESC, maybe you can get the target answer.

Would this esc and motor work together? The esc is sensorless and the motor is sensored.

Any sensorless ESC will run either motor. Sensored ESCs are more picky. For example a Tekin ESC will run any motor you hook up, but a Novak ESC will only run certain sensored motors, and nothing else.

It would work, but you should get the XErun sensored ⅛ or sct esc for use with that motor to take advantage of it being sensored.

LRP, Novak, viper, and Tamiya are the common manufactures that have escs that only run sensored

castle, tekin, SP, HW, and orion make escs that do both sensored and sensor less.

X2 on getting a sensored ESC. If you have to, get a TrackStar sensored ESC from Hobbyking, do what you have to do within your budget if it is tight, but do yourself a favor and get a sensored ESC. I have tried the route you are trying and the car works, but the hesitation and cogging from a stop makes the car no fun to drive. You wall the throttle and it has to think for a minute before it goes anywhere (in basic terms) It is really annoying.

I usually run sensored in my 1/10 scale but this will be for a 1/8 buggy. My buddy runs a sensored hobbywing system in his 1/8 buggy and leaves the sensor cable unplugged and it is just as smooth as when it is plugged in. I'm just trying to save a little money since I'm going to leave the sensor cable unplugged if i bought the sensored version I might as well buy the sensorless.

I think how well it works when you run sensorless is hit and miss. I have one Hobbywing system that runs sensorless and it works really well. I have a newer version of the same system and it cogs. I ran one sensored motor with the same sensorless Hobbywing ESC and it cogged so bad it was undriveable. I guess the short answer to your original question is that it will work, but how well it will work you will have to see.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I will probably go for the sensored esc since you have had cogging with that system.
