Default Tire Question

My son and i have been racing for just over a year and we are baffled at the thought that slick tires work on damp/ wet clay. If any engineers out there could shed some light on this for us we would greatly appreciate it. The only thing i can think of is as the tires flex they form a bit of suction to the wet clay.

Simple friction really, same as dry grip on pavement. "Wet" is probably not the best description, damp or moist is probably more accurate. All traction is about rubber contact. The pins/tread are what is necessary to achieve contact in some conditions.
