Good starter for 14 year old?

Before buying ANYTHING... take him to a local track and see what's going on. See if he likes it first.
Otherwise, there are tons of great hobby-level cars to have fun and play with in the street/back yard, etc. This is the easiest part.
Racing is another story. 1/10 4wd SCT is probably the *easiest* to drive, but initial cost is higher.
1/10 2wd anything is going to be the most economical to run, but generally hardest to drive. If he masters 1/10 2wd anything, he will be fast with anything.
Associated, Losi and Tekno are all worth considering. They have products that can fit into the hobby and race categories.
For pure bashing pretty much anything can do, but Traxxas and Hpi make some of the most fun products.
