Questions?? Keeping ESC Temp Down When Motor Temp is Fine?

Probably one of the dumbest questions to ask but here it is:

I run an AE SC10b upgraded with a high speed Savox SG servo with uprgraded horn plus a Castle BEC at 7.4V. This and I swapped out the stock power plant in favor of a Castle SV2/3800kv 1410 combo. Also upgraded the hexes to the AE aluminum clamping instead of the stock plastic hexes.

On loose dirt tracks it performs great and the motor at most is at 110-120 degrees after a full 5000mah 2s pack. Tires/wheels are AKA's. The battery packs are the Gens Ace 40C hard case. ESC temp after a full run is around 107-115 degrees. Battery pack after a full run is around 85-90 degrees.

Now I put on Slingshot paddles and Mohawks with Protrack Beadlocks all around. Obviously much more weight but I cannot even run it for more than 12 minutes before the ESC is above my comfort zone of 120 degrees. The pack at this point is in the high 90's and the motor is around high 90's as well.

If I swap to a MMP will this solve my issue of the ESC getting too hot? Or should I just slap a 12V brushless fan on top of the SV2 I have laying around?

I could obviously drop the pinion down a couple of teeth...but then I lose top end.

120 is very low for esc temps. They can get up to 150-160 with no problems, but you should try to not let them get over 160. You can put a fan on it if you want, but again, 120 is very low.

Yes 120 is low but keep in mind I only ran it for about 12-15 min. If I had drained the pack it would be smoking. Basically I took it out to a loose sand volleyball court at a neighborhood park for testing on a shake down run.

I'll try the fan and see if I can drop it 7-10 degrees. If that doesn't work I would probably need to use a MMP right?

Did you also gear down? The motor will be drawing much more power when running in sand and the esc might not be able to cope with the amp load. Regearing is best. Otherwise switch to the mmp

The sidewinder sv2 has always run on the how side when I use it

I agree. You must be pulling a lot of amps when running in sand. I say get a fan and see if the temps go down to your liking. If that does not work then go with the mmp.

Your temps aren't going to climb much more to the end of the pack. After 5 minutes the temps are usually fairly stable. You should easily be able to finish out the packs without going over 160.

ESC shouldnt get up to 160F, 150F is the highest it should ever get and even that is hot. No wonder why so maybe people get on here complaining that their esc or motor have failed.

Temps don't go up in a linear fashion, the tend to reach maximum or climb very slowly once you hit a certain temp based on your gearing, # of cells etc. 120 after 15 minutes is absolutely fine and I personally wouldn't even change anything.

Of course if you swap to a MMP your worries will be gone. I see no point to run a Sidewinder if you have a MMP just lying around.

Well the MMP is for a custom scale tuber crawler rig setup short course lol. But I will slap a fan on the sv2 see what happens if not ill just gear down no biggie.

Didn't know that temps on ESCs aren't linear. So once they reach a temp they usually hang around there a don't get any hotter? How about motor temps and lipo temps do they plateau out as well?

120 is cool as cucumber in my book whether we are talking about esc or fan.

The MMP fan doesn't even turn on until temps hit 150.

I took one of the leads of my CC BEC (it has 2) and ran it to the fan on my MMP so the fan is always on. I can run for 30 minutes in 100+ ambient temps and the ESC never gets above 120.

I run my sct esc to 120 but that's in a t4 with stock tires, !!
I think the paddles and the heavy rims are what is temping u higher!

The higher temps are due to the sand youre running in. Sand sucks the wheels down and has a huge amount of resistance.

Yup I guess my only option is to drop a couple of teeth since the body barely has any breathing room for incoming airflow.
