Greeting from the land down under!!!!!

We are in the process of rebuilding our off road track and I wanted some ideas for surfaces from people that have already built theirs. We run on local council/ county land and it is outdoor and subject to the grace of god when it comes to the weather.

I wanted some feedback on what we need to do to get the track up to scratch as I have seen some wicked tracks in the good old US of A....

We want a surface that doesn't break up and provides great traction and if possible limit the tyre wear.

Best tracks (most fun) I've run on have been a loamy dirt that the tires can dig into. Great traction and good wear on the tires with that kinda surface. Kinda like a sandy blackdirt. But most all tracks I see are just built out of whatever soil is already there be it black dirt or clay. I'd say just build it on the highest part of the property you are going to use. That way the water will run off it.

Maintenance is key. You have to keep it well maintained, above anything else. Clay helps, but a little thought toward drainage is worth a million.

is used for the 'Blue Groove' tracks and what does this term mean???

Blue groove is a track that is very high in clay content, and becomes very hard-packed after a lot of use. I personally hate them, because that is not what offroading is about. The "blue" is the color that the track becomes with all the rubber left behind. You usually run slicks on a track like that. They are VERY rough on tires.

we are thinking about adding some type of oil or sealer to keep the track together and stop it breaking apart.. have you guys heard about this?? if so what did you use???

I've heard of some using calcium chloride I believe it is. The stuff they put on dirt/gravel roads to keep dust down. Also have heard of some using pop syrup to gain traction and blue groove like conditions. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong about either. And I'm also interested to hear other ideas or stuff to use.

I have run on a track with that additive and it was pretty good, although I ended up with seized bearings about one month later.. do you know of any other additives that have been used???

On our track we use coke syrup. It grooves the track up crazy.

here in Puerto Rico we constantly battle against rain in a big way and sometimes with a nice sunny day too, so we constantly have to give maintenance to our track to keep it in top shape, specially in the infield area, the dirt we use is like a red clay with a little bit of sand so it can be easily molded when wet and dry. But what gives us a better result is a green carpet used on boats, that gives constant traction in jumps and it keeps them in good shape longer.

I have heard about the calcium chloride too, in a magazine, but we have had a hard time finding where its sold or how we can get it.

I've heard of using some sugar in it or you can use some clay that always works.... i also like when some tracks have sand mixed in cause it will help it dry out a lil. bit faster....and yeah blue grooves are very rough on tires.... and you get out side of the groove after you've been on it... hang on tight, cause you'll be loose and all over for a few turns.
