I'm running a 5.5t on our medium size track. I enjoy the power but I'm not full bore on the throttle. To each their own, if the driver can handle it the motor is fine.

Default less motor.

I am the perfect example of less motor I am faster. I had a 5.5. Way too fast. Put an 8.5 in it. Much smoother. One thing I also learned. Tires are 95% of the whole setup.

coming from tc 17.5 i was used to mashing the throttle often with little consequences, now on my buggy even with a 7.5 i have had to learn self control with index finger. Now that I am getting better with throttle control I am finding my lap times have dropped considerably and consistency has gone up. All with very few changes to my setup.
When seeking advice, people should be willing to accept constructive criticism, even if it isn't what you wanted to hear...no room for snippy

Hey guys, what are you guys running as far as motor and ESC? I ran a speed passion reventon pro 1.1 and 8.5R at a larger track this weekend and didn't make it a single heat without thermal shutdown. I have holes in the body, fans on the ESC and motor, and now ordered a heat sink for the motor but it seems a bit ridiculous. I was geared so the motor topped out right before the end of the front stretch with 5 degrees timing. Nothing is binding or anything and all the bearings/shafts are good.

I'm debating putting an 550 motor in it if this continues.

What pinion/spur r u running? sounds like you might have to go down with your pinion size other than that your 8.5
could need replacing!
Im using a hw 120 amp esc with a novak 6.5 motor 19 tooth pinion with kit spur gear never ever had a problem.

I would double check that your thermal cut off isn't set too low by accident (done it myself)

I'm not sure what spur gear but it's the largest I have and then pinion is a 25T. It was a fairly tall gear but it had to get keep it up to speed around the large track.

it's set at 95 C. That's the only setting my ESC allows other than off.

The stock 81T spur should be fine for most tracks, even large ones with 20+ second lap times. This goes against everything said above, but maybe you need more motor. It also sounds like your thermal setting may be a bit off, check that as well. I run a 6.5T geared at 81/19 in blinky mode on a large track as well and I am not hurting for speed. Depending on how many times you've thermal'd, your motor may be toast.

I agree with TPR as your pinion gear may need to drop a tad or your motor could be laid out. Hope it's just your pinion needing a down size.
I run a Novak 6.5 with the Novak Pulse V2 and am running the 81t spur with a 20t pinion with no issues. I also run a 19t pinion with the 81t spur and have no issues.

Have an excellent week my friend.

That's exactly what I'm doing and same gearing. 6.5 with an Orion r10pro set in blinky mode. I never get out throttled and my temps stay very low.

Ok guys. Yea i've got a 7.5R motor on the way and I ran a 7.0T Reedy motor in my DEX410 last summer no problem. The 8.5 is out of my 2WD buggy and the motor never got above 158 from what I saw but could have gotten up around 170 but from monitoring cool down temps the ESC was always hotten and cooled down faster so the motor should be good and it still runs perfect, but I guess we'll see.

I'm hoping having the fan blow on a heat sink on the motor will help a bit as well as shims between the fan and ESC as well as lower gearing.
Mainly seems odd because the night before (10 degrees cooler weather) the motor ran fine with a 23T pinion and 18 degrees timing.

Rc dude, you'd know if the motor was melted, it would stink like nothing you've ever smelled before, but heat hurts and it would feel soft. It's much more obvious in a 4wd vs. a 2wd, due to the weight and drag. Anyhow, drop the 7.5 in it with a 23 tooth pinion and see how it goes.
