Default Pinion Gears

Hey guys,

How many tooth pinion gear do you guys recommend? I'm looking to practice at the track but not quite ready to race. I just assembled the XB4 and I'm running an Orion Rs Pro w/ Reedy Sonic Mach 2 Modified Brushless Motor (6.5T). Right now the car is super noisy and slow until I lift it off the ground. I've tried moving the pinion closer and further from the spur etc... Right now I'm using 21T pinion that was recommended by the local Hobby Shop. Also, I just reversed the radio throttle because it was backwards... any possibility it's causing it to be slow??? Any advice is much appreciated....

You may want to check your wiring. Make sure the wires from the esc to the motor are matching red to red etc... If they are and you get forward motor when you pull the trigger then you are ok ( if you pull and the motor goes the wrong way reverse that channel) then just recalibrate the TX and the ESC.
The pinion mesh is like every other car, as for gear I'd go a lot lower like 15-17 depending on the track etc.

If the wiring is in order I would recalibrate everything. If you had it that complete system in another car you may not need to do a recal but I would still do a complete recal and check of all trims epas etc. Triple check the pinion mesh, no hurrying on this.
Once you get that right and hit the track doublecheck the slipper and make sure it's on the loose side so you don't hash the spider gears in the diff ( if a noise happens when you gas it then it may be the diff gears..)

Cool, I'll try that... All the parts are brand new. The ESC/Motor/Buggy/Radio... I calibrated the ESC just now... What do you mean by trims, epas, Sorry, just getting back into the hobby after a 20 year break...

ah HAH , I too came back and recently after a long break and it took me days and some sheer luck just to get the battery charger on.... but I used to build computers from scratch and I can barely use a modern phone...
What kind of radio ?
edit
and that is a TON of motor
like an old 8 triple or oval only kind of thing
I like to be able to actually use full throttle so I run a meager 10.5

I just went off a recommendation on the motor.... hobby shop... I've been enjoying my b4.2 (Pretty easy and fun). So, I thought I'd check out a 4wd buggy and went for the best... and the fastest....

Motor is super noisy as is the spur and pinion... As soon as I lift it off the ground the tires spin so fast there coming unglued.... but no luck on the ground. Also, when I turn it slows down even more ... The radio is a Futaba 4PL...

I tend to run less motor than most people
The problem you are describing seems familiar but ?
Obviously not a radio thing.
Check the drivetrain starting with the spur, maybe something as simple as a loose setscrew. Check the front seperately then the rear, Doublecheck the measurement on the slipper, but that wouldn't be noisy.
Weird

My fault... Motor isn't noisy, just gears, but this is my first 4wd so maybe its my virgin ears... I loosened the slipper clutch, which seemed to help a little... Originally I had it set at 5.5mm like the manual stated... Oh well, I'll just keep at it... Thanks for the pointers...

These cars are considerably noisier than a 2wd. It comes from all the additional gears meshing together. Did you lube the diff gears with the graphite grease?

yah 4wheelers are a bit noisier of course but compared to some this one is pretty quiet. Definitely run the slipper a bit loose, it settles in as the shocks and diffs do. They do need a more frequent maintenance schedule but not as much as some cars.

Guys when you do the metal gear upgrade do you use the Plastic pins or do you need to use the pins from the NT1 as well

either way, metal lasts longer of course. The metal gears are thicker and the upgrade 35t bevel gear is thicker as well. If you were shimming the original plastic gears just be aware you may not need to shim with the upgrades.
