Default Pinions - does the brand matter ?

I want to buy a new 13t pinion for my Losi SCTE. On my usual rc shop site I see Mod1 13t pinions from Kyosho, Speed Passion (Aluminium), XRay.. and there's a price difference of upto 40%.

So does it matter which one I take ? Is one stronger then the other ? Does one make me coffee for that extra 40% ?

Yep, some makes are smoother and stronger than others. Some have sharper teeth while others are made from different materials.

Also some cars need specific shorter or longer pinions. The nexx8 and some of the caster buggies, if i remember correctly, are examples. Normal pinions cause rubbing against the batts so shorter pinions were required.

I personally just buy from the reputable brands. I run a lot of kyosho cars and their pinions generally last for ages. Been running them exclusively for a while now ... Pretty sure Xray/Hudy pinions are up there as well.

I've learnt to avoid stuff from yeahracing, 3racing, etc. They do work fine and all but I had to retire from a main due to a melted pinion. Can't remember which brand. Aluminium pinions just cant stand the heat. go steel if you can.

Used to love Kimsbrough racing gears. But they're delrin not steel i think.

Lol.ill try to see if i can find it. Might not be the heat etc but it looked melted and i ended up w8th a dnf.tats good enuf reason for me to stop using and promoting it.

Never had similar problems after switching pinions.

It could very well be the aluminium pinion being too soft to work with a steel spur gear. Sadly i no longer have the car with me or remember wat pinion brand i used to replicate it.

Cant explain how or why it happened since u ruled out heat. Unforrunately i do not care for such details lol. It just happened and the lhs suggested i switch pinions and it never happened again.

Normally, the shaft will rub before any pinion (unless it's a long shank pinion). I have a Nexx 8 and it's been fine with all my pinions.

Hm... the only experience I have was with a fellow racer on the track. That's the reason he switched brands. He said the pinions our LHS carry was just eating into the batt housing.

I like the Tekno pinions. They have the largest grub screw as far as I know. They also last a long time.

Off road, you never want an aluminum pinion. IMO. I'd argue in asphalt you might not want them either if where you race isn't super clean.

Tekno pinions are the best Mod1 sized imho. The 2.5mm grub screw seals the deal.

x2 The mod 2wd I raced had a Robinson Racing setup and it was bulletproof. I bet their 4wd stuff is just as good.

I run their extra hard steel mod 1 pinion in my scte. They held up great in a castle powered pede 4x4 as well.
