Default The right gearing.

Is there a special formula to figure out how to gear your SCT. I have a cheat sheet for gearing a 10T, 17.5T and an 8.5T motor, How do you guys figure out how to gear a motor correctly (turns vs KV). I fried two motors already and I'm sure it was the gearing. I know that I ran a way too small pinion for a 17.5T motor and it got so hot it melted the plastic inside and I had to throw it away and again I didn't check the gearing on a 13T motor and fried that also. Any way to calculate gearing or anywhere I can get a chart would be helpful. Thanks.
