If the kid finds it interesting, he will figure it out. The best radios out for small hands are the spektrum dx2s and dx3s. The handle is smaller and the trigger is closer to the handle.

The dx3e also has a smaller handle as well. fits my 3 1/2 year old nicely. he will use his other hand to put it in reverse. I think the flysky is slightly smaller than most as well. Just turn the epa down and he will be fine.
The real conversation with the wife will be convincing her that you need one now too because he wants to drive WITH dad.

If the radio isn't ajustable you can heat it up with a lighter. I am a bit older than your son, but I have small hands. You can always heat the trigger back up and move it back if you need to. My two cents.

I heated up the throttle trigger and bent it (closer) towards the brake.
Also added fuel tubing over the lever, made a huge difference to him.

Good Luck ! Keep him encouraged..

Guy down here has a 3 year running a SC with a fullsize pistol grip radio and he kicks butt for his age. May even have started at 2.
