Default which tyres to use

been looking round for some decent tyres to use on a dirt track, the base is normally quite hard packed but it normally always has a heavy dust covering on it, short of sweeping the track prior to racing what tyres would be the best choice

Your best bet is to go to the track you are refering to and take a look, or ask the other racers what the best choice is. Every track is different.

+1 all tracks will pretty much only stock up on the compound of tires that work best for there track surface

Depends on how much loam is on the track , if its really deep then a large/wide spaced pin type tires work best (Bow Tie , Crossbeams) . If its not too bad then smaller pin type tires work best (Holeshots , Gridirons) ....

I race on the track and have tried several types including Losi step pins, studs, bigshots, proline calibers, holeshots, JC goosebumps, but none of them really work brilliantly, it seems nobody makes a tyre that works great on unprepared loose tracks, tbh my favourite tyre was the proline stubby but alas proline decided to stop making it

At my local track the calibers and aka cityblocks are pretty good. (go for the cityblocks first)
