Default When is my motor too hot?

I am messing around with the gearing of my SC10. I have a IR thermometer to keep tabs on the temp of the motor and ESC. When is my motor too hot?? I don't want to jump up my pinion size and end up burning up my motor. Thanks guys.

motor turn doesn't matter as far as safe temp goes but brand does.

most are safe up to 165, LRP a little hotter 180 ish, and I've heard castle can be run safely to 200.

180 is about the hottest you want to see any motor really. Any hotter than that, sure it might run but you most likely aren't getting the full potential out of it.

For this season I am racing with the stock Reedy 3300kv that my SC10RS came with. It's my understanding that the 3300kv Reedy is about the same as a 13.5. Most of the guys running 13.5 at my track are running 21/75. Seems like a big change from the stock setup of 18/87. I am going to run it around the backyard with that setting and keep tabs on the temp every 5 minutes.

5 second rule. If you can touch it without wincing for more than 5 seconds your fine

You want to be able to cook an egg on the can. never know when you will be hungry at the track. Slap a big pinion on and crank up the boost and voila... perfect temp to make scrambled eggs

speeds might be the same but the motor design is not. (sensorless vs. a sensored 13.5)

going up a tooth or 2 a time and checking temps is a better idea IMO.

check your temps more often than every 5 min. too, until you get it right.

The 18 pinion that comes on the truck is conservative. You can safely go to 20 - 21 if you are racing it. An 18 is used because the RTR guys could be driving in grass, mud, and in many cases the trucks are not well cared for which means bad gear mesh, bad bearings, and any one of a number of problems that can contribute to motor heat.

Total no-go. People experience temperatures differently, depending on body temperature, surrounding temp, etc. Also, skin makes a big difference.. a construction worker with thick skin on his finger will be able to hold his finger on there much longer than someone with soft hands.
That's why you put down the 20 bucks for an IR thermometer.

Yep I have an automotive grade one and use it more often than risking a burn but its the cheapest way!!

I ran the 21/75 for about 2 minutes and the motor was pretty warm but I'm not sure how hot. I just ordered my IR thermometer yesterday so it is not here yet. I was having trouble getting the gears to mesh because I couldnt move the motor any closer. I thought I had it good, but I guess not cuz I stripped the gear when I was checking the slipper. It was so much quicker with the 21/75. I threw on the 21/81 and it is running great. It's a good middle of the road. Once I get to the track I will be able to make sure its what I want.

180 is about the top end that you want to see an electric motor temp at. any more and you've got to change something with your gearing b/c your gonna cook your motor over time at those temps

70 degrees C or more is going to burn anyones skin on their finger, no matter who it is...

So I got my IR thermometer last week. I have been doing alot of testing and trying different gearing. I am not able to get to the track because it is an hour away, so all of my testing is in the backyard which is grass and gravel. I think I have settled on 21/81. After ten minutes of almost constant running with this setup, the temp is running right around 175. Once again this is on the stock sensorless Reedy 3300kv motor that came in the truck. We run 5 minute races so I think I am pretty safe at the track. Not to mention that I am testing in grass and gravel, so I almost always spinning the tires, which to my understanding heats up the motor too.
