Will smart diff grease work on the diff balls on my 22?

No.
Use clear diff ball grease, otherwise diff will slip till it's dead.

Smartdiff grease is meant to achieve the same function as other diff greases, so I can't see why it wouldn't work
I don't quite follow why you would say this about the smartdiff grease. Have you tried it? or are you just making the assumption that smartdiff grease is like any other normal grease?
