I am going to run blinky 17.5 for the first time and have no idea where to start with gearing or the timing in the motor. I know everyone seems to be going back to blinky but I have only raced in the tekin days so this is new to me. I have a duo 3 and a tekin speedo with a b4.1.

Any help is appreciated!

Nice! I was hearing a 35/72 and thought that seemed high for a gearing.

That is closer to what you would run if you were running 0 endbell timing, but we have found that the D3s run REALLY strong geared a bit lower, with the endbell timing turned up. It's my opinion that most people over-gear their 17.5s... usually the buggy is still increasing in speed before the car hits the end of the straight, which means the gearing is too tall. You want to gear the car so it reaches max RPM before the spot on the straight where you would brake or let-off.

(start with the 31 pinion, and keep an eye on temps... the D3s should run really cool, somewhere around 110-120 after 10 minutes)

I have someone I race with running a duo2 would it change much for him? I thought I remember the duo 2 should be geared a tooth lower is that right?

Two things to consider: 1. Don't use temp as a measure of performance. This is where the super high gearing trend comes from. Because of motor heat fade the cars run like they did back in the 1400mah battery days. 2. To Capt.'s point, straightaway speed is usually not very important to a good lap time, acceleration is more so, as is the ability to clear jumps if there are any difficult ones.

Id start him in the same place. It's just a starting place... you will want to see how the motor "feels" on all the various places around the track to see if you need to gear up a tad, or down a tad with the motor.

Thanks for the help guys! I think you have me going in a direction I will like better. The little bit I played with the higher gearing the car felt very sluggish and had 0 punch.
