How fast is too fast for a B4
I currently have my old Castle 7700 in my B4 with an old Mamba Max ESC that cooks at about 250 Fahrenheit with the motor at 50%. I'm looking for a replacement motor and ESC combo. I want to be as fast as I can, without overpowering the buggy. I race on a small, high bite, indoor clay track. I have a Thunder power 10.5 in my short course truck and thought about upgrading that and putting the 10.5 in my buggy, but I'm concerned about competing with all the guys running 8.5 and 9.5 motors in their buggy's. Any suggestions?

When you rip your tires off the wheels on the launch acceleration, you have too much power.

Honestly, I run a GTB 2, with a 6.5 ballistic, even turned down it is super fast. I think you should run a 10.5, and practice consistency and staying up with them guys who are running the lower turn motors. Then when you move up in motor, you can be faster then them, and be more consistent.

I looked up the castle 7700 and that is WAY to much motor for a b4 unless your doing a speed run. That tops out at about 50mph with a 2s pack. Run the 10.5... I know it's tough, I am just getting back into offroad after a 7 year break. It's hard to slow down and run stock buggy but it's how you will get better at jumping and being smooth which = fast especially in buggy.

I'd say less glue... To the finger!!!
Learn to control that 8.5, it's pleeeenty fast for the B4.

The fastest laps on our track get laid down by stock buggies with 17.5s....no esc timing. We just started an Expert buggy class that allows timing but I haven't seen the lap times improve yet. I wouldn't be able to handle much more than a 13.5. My hat is off to you guys who run 6.5s and 7.5s.

Last time I raced the Lazer, I ran a Nosram Storm Evo 4.5T, zero timing (obviously ), 21/73 ratio.
That thing was stupid fast, not only that, it made me smoothen down my driving ONE HELL OF A LOT! Imagine having so much power onto such a light car, and on a loose dirt track.
I learned to accelerate smoothly (I am smoother than most punch control/ABS systems on the recent ESCs), make the car flow instead of drive all sloppy like I used to with the 14T (constantly punching the throttle to get some juice out of the monster). I even improved my on-power steering skills, and learned to anticipate my movements (obvious reasons for it, a tiny bit more of throttle, or a steep servo movement and my car would rocket onto the side walls).
Eventually put back in the 14T with 35deg timing and then I was flying over the track. It didn't have as many malice as the Storm had, but there wasn't as much top end power, so I was able to do more consistent laptimes (due to smoother throttle application, and because there was less power, the car was more forgiving)
Jesus. If only everybody could experiment the switch, from getting to drive smoothly on a low gear ratio and a 4.5T, then go to a boosted 14T... You feel as if you'd found heaven (and so do your laptimes)

i'm not the fastest nor near the fastest guy at our track, but i know he runs an 8.5 with the throttle turned down in the radio. a 9.5 would most likely be perfect. Find a motor that is controllable through the turns and technical part of the track and FORGET ABOUT THE STRAIGHT!. a boosted novak ss 10.5 was just as fast if not faster than a standard 100% throttle 8.5. u can only put so much power to the ground and makes no sense to gain .2 second on the straight to loose 1 second on the technical section because the motor is just too strong. clean lines are way faster than a big motor.

Dude, get an lrp sxx comp v2 with a x12 10.5. Guys I race with can't even touch me let alone keep up with me. And they are running 7.5,6.5 boosted to the moon.
