As for the Viper, I haven't run one yet but have seen a couple and they look pretty good. Might be worth a try.
IDK about these vipers... They are just as much as a Tekin... The Tekin is proven! I would go with the Tekin unless you wanna spend money then go with the Orion R10!

I hear nothing but good things about Viper products. They also have a good warranty program too. If I had to do it all over I would buy all Viper myself.

Both will work with no problem. If you ever plan on running 4wd or 4wd SC plan ahead go with 10R.

I switched from LRP to Tekin because of the programming and now LRP has it as well. I wanted to try something new so I bought a Viper. I am a huge Tekin fan. My local onroad track was trying to ban them when the whole timing thing was first coming out and I pushed to use them and figure them out.
Now that I have switched to Viper, my Tekin's don't seem as good. The Castle ESC's were always smoother than the Tekin but they were huge. Now there's an ESC that's smoother than the Castle stuff and the same size as the Tekin, and it IS cheaper than the Tekin. In my mind, money well spent on the Viper.

Between the two, I would say 10r. Now dont get me wrong the 10 will work absolutely fine with no problems on that 8.5, but plan ahead, if you want to go 4wd or 4wd corr later on you will have the esc to do it. I have been running the viper since befor production with no problems and I am very happy with the results. The customer service is phenominal, and most in my area are in the process of or already have changed to viper.

Hope this helps.

is there a possibility to connect a phone or laptop to the Viper ESC's? Maybe for updating software in the future? If so, via what link?

I Like tekin but wanted to try something else ,I'm running the 10r with 13.5 motor and its been good ..I like the progauge better because its free with the esc and works nice no labtop .using a savox servo and no glitches..dex410r ..only issue was with motor black rotor cap sits funny not flush all the way and my senser wire came loose once ..
