Default upgrading traxxas bandit xl-5

I live in toronto and i want to upgrade my bandits speed. which method is more effective, brushless motor or lipo battery.
i would appreciate it if you find me a good lipo battery and charger under $100.

ok so there is a few ways you can go with
but this is the way i would go soo you wouldnt have to buy extra stuff when you want to upgrade
first buy these
brushless motor: http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m11-car-2848-4300.html 20$
brushless esc:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Castle-Creations...ht_4527wt_1110 40$

thats 60 dollars for a good solid brushless system that is lipo ready
then if you want to get lipos
heres a good setup
battery: cheaper:http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-30c-40...-hardcase.html 25$
still a great battery but for 10 more dollars you can get more runtime and that is
: http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-40c-50...-hardcase.html
and for charger
: http://www.hobbypartz.com/thac6smbachw.html
witch is roughly 75 dollars and its ac compatable

just a few questions

do i have to get the brushless ESC, what does it improve and can it still drive through dirt, water, snow, ect...

im a begginer in rc cars so i dont know how to assemble these. can local hobby shops do the work for me and how hard is it.

well it is not waterproof anymore
but also you have to take in consilderation
that every time you go through water your supposed to be breaking it down and doing water maintanence anyway
yes you will need the esc and motor
because if you look on the motor there is 3 wires not just 2
if you post a picture i can show you how to lay it out
you will only have to go to the hobby shop for a few things like soldering on connectors and that such if you dont know how to do it yourself
if you wanted a water proof system you would want to go welenion but thats 170$ and you will be gettin more speed out of this one
just think if you really mant to go through water just put the xl5 back in
and look at my next message

and for laying it out the motor is just going to go back in the same just set the gear mesh right ( hows the gears set together)
and for the esc just find a clear spot on the chassis and mount it with double stick tape (you can buy it at the hobbyshop)
its actually really simple
and for lipos they arnt waterproof either
so for right now i would stick to a 7 or 8 cell nimh
then upgrade to a 2s laterwhen you start racing or getting track time
but this setup will be great for a bandit wheelies on demand
my slash has a vxl brushless system in it i paid 170 for and i dont like it too much
but i have this settup in my b44 and its awesome it also stays very cool

here is a list of things youll want to get at the hobbyshop

double sidded tape 2-5$
connector (s) plus soldered on anywhere from 2-10$ depending on if you can solder and what connectors you get
i would reccomend deans
and i mean thats all you really need extra
i would also convert to 32 pitch jato gears so you wont strip them out as easy
5-7$
but its not needed but it will save you money

Good stuff here for some budget minded brushless set ups. I am not new to the hobby but am new to brushless after getting out of nitro. Would the same set up you posted work well in an older JRx2? What about a B4.1 FT or SC10FT? That ESC is cheap enoughI could see getting two and two motors for a Clodbuster...would that work?

Sorry for the thread hijack but I have a bunch of projects and looking for some cheap electronics to get going. Already have 3 of the gen ace 5000MAH batteries you posted and a LiPo charger so I just need some ESC and motor ideas for cheap. I was looking at hobbywing combos but these are cheaper yet...

One thing I question is the ESC says rated for 2S 4.2V but 2S are 7.4V. I don't understand how they are compatible?

I tried a Lipo on my grandsons Rustler and no noticable increase in power. Ran longer but that may actually cause the motor to overheat. Brushless motor with Lipo battery is the combo if you want more power and longer operating times.

@joeman
yes it will work in your setups
and if you already have the batteries and charger your good to go
its probably just a typo
also are you planning on running 3s anyone
i run 3s in my slash with jaco foams and high gearing and im getting 65 and then it blows away lol
yes the castle sidewinder sct is lipo ready
and will work good with that motor
you might have a little more money to spend
higher kv = faster lower = tourque
so for the b4 i would run the one i showed up to a 5000
geared youll be going fast and also get up to that speed fast
i run that setup in a b44
4wd version
perfect

There are some waterproof ESCs out there but I'm pretty sure you'd be coming close on your budget if you bought one. I think LRP makes a few

i think i can find a better setup for you all. http://www.hobbypartz.com/hobbywing-...hless-esc.html
http://www.hobbypartz.com/96m23-car-3650-3930.html

costs a little less, and while the esc does not appear to be as good as the sidewinder on paper, i have been using two of them in my race vehicles for 2 years with no problems and no cogging. as long as that fan runs, the esc doesnt even get warm. the motor? oh, the tacon. i have no idea how they can pack so much performance into something that small for $22. just get this setup, it works very well. plus, the hobbywing can handle more moisture than the castle.
