Default my 2nd MMM esc burned

This is what i was running:
Hot Bodies D8T
gear 46/17
MMM/2200kv
1 2s + 1 3s = 5s Turnigy Lipo 5000mAh 40c
what could cause the esc flame and burn out in coupe minutes of run time? first is my 1 1/2 years old MMM esc, got burn and smoke, and then put a new esc in the next day, 5 minutes later is burned the same way again. Most likely is the Lipos right? or could be the motor? ( its pretty old too).

If you don't have connection/solder issues w/ the motor wires I doubt it would send the esc smoking out like that. I'd have to also lean toward the lipo having the issue, but that is also rare w/o solder issues (you do have lots of connections) or a short but if you have 1 bad cell in the mix it could cause problems. Since you only had minutes on the 2nd MMM maybe the local supplier will swap it for you and deal w/the return themselves? If you burn up three, well as they say, 3 strikes and you're out. At that point you know it's not an ESC issue, and with out a way to test (specialized equip) or rule out each part it will be a challenge to figure out which was at fault other than trial and error.

sucks.. good luck maybe someone else has had these symptoms though and will speak up.

I'm leary of running a 2s and a 3s lipo together. Try (once you get a new esc) and run it on 3s and see what happens. as far as i know running mismatched packs are a no-no

i think my best bet is new lipos and new motor. so by runing 5s, i should use the single pack to be best right?

I would be very leery of running a 2S and 3S in series like that. I'm guessing it has to do with the lipos.

x2

In my D8Te with the exact same ESC/motor combo I ran a 14t pinion on 4S Lipo. You are way over geared for 5S which could also cause high current draw spikes blowing the esc.

+1 Wow good catch, I didn't notice how over geared he was.. I'm surprised he has not had heat issue on the motor and w/ the lipo's as well. I've never run hb equipment so I didn't even think about the gearing... but yup big issues geared like that.

even on a 4s setup that is steep gearing.. but on 5s it's just way too much. As you increase voltage you need to decrease gearing if you are on the same motor. If you change motors to a better kv rating for 5s lipo it would help some but that gearing is just too high.

heat issues wasnt bad, esc burned only after few minutes, but i figure is gotta be the lipos, didnt know i cant really mix 2s and 3s together even if is the same rating.
