Losi 4wd
It's a shame TLR has waited so long to come out with the TLR 22. I think the buggy is much better the the XXX product. At least durability wise.
I have been waiting for a new Losi XX-4 replacement since the XX-4 went away. I still believe the XX-4 is the king of all 4wd buggies. The only problem is, it is too brittle. The XX-4 can run with the best and jump in my opinion better than the best and can handle the roughs better.
The XXX-4 has more flaws then the XX-4. I will say, on a flat course track, the car is fast. Very fast, but, it seems to be prone to as many issues and the XX-4 plus, this car can not jump no where as well as the xx-4. Maybe the XXX-4 can corner better in certain circumstanced, but, I think the XX-4 needs to be updated with an aluminum chassis, Not just stiffer shock towers, but, stronger and reinforced shock towers. Also the ability to shoehorn in current motor and electronics and batteries. If they stick with a 3 belt system, they need to make it so the car can be maintained better or create stronger/winder belts. The single belt of the XXX4 I think works, but, there certainly was issues with skipping on hard breaking.
I have both and I ran the XXX4 with custom built aluminum shock towers. I was testing them and found out that even in a mediocre crash, the shock towers still bent. I actually experimented with very thick shock towers and the only issue with this is the chassis ended up taking more of the punichment hence breaking of the chassis.
The shock towers on both cars needs to be either with the front and rear support like the XX-4, but, the support needs to be higher up on the shock tower to add more of the upper tower rigidity.
Given Gen2 of the front shock tower was a significant improvement over the original (Which I still have about 9 left. I remember purchasing about 10 shock towers when the Gen2 came out. I never traded them in for the new tower because I was not sure how strong the new shock tower was and I only broke 1 after putting the new one one.
The XXX-4, the same deal. I put the carbon fiber ones on and in one lap, flipped the car over and SNAP!! Front busted. I currently have the plastic units back on the car because I don't have any more carbon fiber ones and I just have not made time to re-tool my machine to make another set of shock towers.
Here are some pics of some prototype parts I made for the XXX-4. The Shock tower on top is a much thicker one than the tower on the lower left. I snapped the chassis with one like this one. It didn't bend though, but, it's too heavy (adding too much weigh to the car) but, it surely makes the buggy easy to push harder into a corner. The other 2 are stronger than stock but, when pushed, they bend. On a flat surface and a rubber hammer, they can be bent back to almost even.
