Default sperera has a slash

decided to get a traxxas slash (bought second hand off a mate) for something different for when the large scales drive me up the wall.

so far ive put on rear rpm arms, upgraded the tires to aka city blocks, used some thicker shock oil. runs a hobby wing esc and brushless motor combo. its RWD but im having so much fun im thinking about buying a 4WD also.

Congrats! Folks like to diss the Slash now that it's been eclipsed by the newer SC offerings, but all around, it really is a good truck. Have fun with it.

took the slash out on sat for a run at knox track, was going great until the front shock cap popped off and sprayed oil everywhere, then noticed that the front shock mount was cracked, lucky I have a spare, planning to fit sometime this week.

decided to do some temp testing on the second battery, after letting it cool for 30 mins after the first battery. about 3/4 into the second battery i used my gun, hottest point on mtoor read 92!

what are my options of lowering this temp?

Replace the hobbywing with a motor design specifically for SC. The Castle SCT would be a much better option.

Is that 92 deg. celsius? If so then yes it's hot, if it's farenheit then it's actualy really cool.

yeah 92 celcius! thats why im so concerned.

where's a good place to buy a castle sct from? also would I need to change the esc as well? esc doesnt seem to get no where near as hot as the motor.

This is a two wheel slash right? The hobbywing stuff is fine for that. I've been running it for a while and it is perfectly suited to 2wd. The Castle SCT would be ridiculously overpowered for a 2wd. I run that motor in my pig of a Losi scte 4x4.

The OP didn't state which hobbywing. You shouldn't be running anything less than 8.5 turns and even that might be too low.

Yes, what kV, or how many turns on the hobbywing? As noted, 8.5T and up should be fine on a 2wd Slash with the right gearing. You might need to go smaller than the 18T pinion though. As for the shock caps, mine used to blow off occasionally on really hard landings until I replaced the caps with the aluminum option parts for the "ultra" shocks. Surprised the shock tower cracked- usually the bodyshell/mounts do a good job of protecting the shock tower from impact on these trucks.

i bought the truck second hand off a mate so I dont know right now how may turns the motor is off the top of my head, i will ask him and update here.

I know the motor is a 4300kv and it was a ezrun combo.

what other pinion gears are comptaible with the 86t spur im running?

should i be looking for another pinion and spur combo or be looking at a new motor? if I go down the motor path do I also have to change the esc?

In my mod slash I was running 18/90 with an 8.5. For mod motors I would definitely put a 90 spur on, especially when you consider the slash's torquey 2.72 trans ratio.

Another quality upgrade is the sealed diff from Fast Lane Machine. Its o-ring sealed and will cut your maintenance down a bunch.

For the shocks, traxxas sells aluminum caps that almost guarantee that the caps don't blow off, but they still have to be built with the proper amount of fluid.

thanks for the info, good to know about those shock caps, going to try and find some now, anywhere you would recomend I can get them from?

also do you know if my 18t pinion would mesh ok with a 90t spur?

spent some time on the slash last night. discovered the front bulk head is badly broken, so removed all that, already confirmed my local hobby shop has them in stock so going to get one off them today.

also should be getting some different pinions so I can check motor temps and find a happy set up.

ran a couple of lipo's through the slash over the weekend. just on the front lawn. all 1/4 - 3/4 throttle stuff. did some temp testing and noticed that the motor for majority of run stayed very cool until the lipo started to get a little low, then the temp all of a sudden jumped to 96 deg c!

is it normal for motor temps to rocket when lipo's start to get low?
