Default Battery charging question

Ok i have been normally charging my batteries at 1C.

Some batteries say they can be charged at 2C or more..

how do you go about doing that? I have a hyperion 720i net 3 charger.

do i just double the mah? like if i was charging a 5000mah battery set it to what?

1c mean 1 X capacity....so charging a 5000mah pack at 5 amps is 1c. 2c would mean charging the same battery at 10 amps. See, 2 X capacity.....make sense?

i think what he is referring to is doubling the charge current. i believe you set your amps at 10. but, i dont really see any one doing this, they just charge it normal

My batteries are rated for 3c charge, but my ice charger is limited to 1C. So I set the capacity in the charger to 9999mah then I can set the charge rate to whatever I want (it goes up to 8amp and I charge at that rate at the track). The capacity setting doesn't really do anything on lipo chargers since it goes by voltage anyway. Hope this answers your question.

my lrp 5900 vtec 50c+ can be charged up to 3c without performance loss but they recommend charging at 10 amps.... just go by what the manufacturer states and u will be sweet.... Dont listen to anyone but what the manufacturer says as they are the ones that have done the testing. but in saying that make sure they are decent packs to... u pay for what you get trust me....

Just charge at 1C unless you are in a really big hurry (forgot to charge and your heat is coming up).

IMO, most Lipo's can handle the higher charge rates, but it is going to hurt the life of the battery.

With current lipo chemistry this is no longer correct.

On a Hyperion you will have a menu that lets you set the charge rate (amps) without having to "lie" about capacity. Hyperion also lets you adjust charge current "on the fly" by pushing the enter button and the charge amps will blink, letting you adjust the current with the up and down buttons.

Which part is not correct?

The part about battery life, charging at higher C rates hasn't shown to have an effect on cycle life, with the current lipo chemestry anyway. More hearsay on my end than anything. If people want to be "safe" and charge at 1C that's fine but I see no reason not to charge at a higher rate if a manufacturer says you can..IMO

Times are a changing...

Most LiPo experts now feel however you can safely charge at a 2C or even 3C rate on quality packs that have a discharge rating of at least 20C or more safely, with little effect on the overall life expectancy of the pack as long as you have a good charger with a good balancing system. There are more and more LiPo packs showing up stating 2C and 3C charge rates, with even a couple manufactures indicating 5C rates. The day of the 10 minute charge is not far off (assuming you have a high power charger and power source capable of delivering that many watts and amps).

Once again, the three main things that shorten LiPo battery life are: HEAT, OVER-DISCHARGING, & INADEQUATE BALANCING.
