Default Gear Ratios

Hi Kids,

Still tinkering with the gear ratio part of life and I have a question. Different combinations of pinion/spur can result with the same final ratio. Such as, with a 2.6 AE transmission, a 21/80 will result in a 9.9 final drive ratio where a 23/87 will be a 9.83 final ratio. (Not exactly the same but pretty close.)

Just for the sake of argument, assume that the 9.9 and 9.83 are equal. Is the performance of those two combinations equal? Or do they produce different end results? Such as is a 23/87 more torquey than a 21/80, or does one result in more heat than the other?

I know what I'm trying to ask, but don't know if I am asking it right. Thanks for your help.

Pete

Some gear examples that come out the same:

75/25 = 3 x 2.6 = 7.8
78/26 = 3 "
81/27 = 3 "

As far as ratios that come out close, if it is a difference of .01 you probly won't see a change where as you go to a .1 difference and if you are used to your setup and track you will start to see a difference.

If you are trying to use a same ratio with different gears, all you are changing is rotating mass. You may feel a difference on a slippery track, but really not by much.

Just my 2¢
