Is this a pretty good esc and 17.5 motor combo.

Im not sure how good of a system you are looking for. I mean very competitive or just something to meet class specs and your son could race with?
When I first got into rc and wanted to go brushless I went with a cheap ESC and a pretty good motor.
here is the ESC:

Its not the best ESC on the market but it worked all last season with no problems. It has good programmable options so you can tune it to your liking. Its sensorless but will work on some sensored motors. It will just not be as smooth as a sensored system. I placed 1-3 in many races with it.

Hobbywing is the OEM of Speed Passion products. I hear that SP does their own programming, but HW stuff works very well. They have an EZRun line of sensorless systems, and XERun line of sensored, both are available with 17.5T motors. Hobbypartz.com has the best prices and shipping on Hobbywing, but they dont carry the whole lineup, you can usually find the rest on Ebay.

Ok without writing a book. Here is a link I found that should explain it.
http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/b...ensorless.html
The basic idea is that a sensored system allows for a smoother start. When I had that other ESC I posted earlier if I tryed to just be as easy as possible on the trigger to see how slow I could make the truck roll at first it would cog a little then go. But with my new mmp sensored ESC I can roll it slow enough to read the writing on the tires. very smooth.
