Default Best 1/8 ESC/Motor combo???

I'm ready to get into 1/8 electric off-road and I don't want to just buy something without REALLY looking into all of my options (unlike how I jumped into Nitro!).

I've already got a great conversion kit for one of my MBX5 buggies. What I'm really looking for advice on is the esc/motor. I'm leaning towards the Tekin RX8/1900KV. My budget is really not a concern. I already know how much this hobby costs and I just want to get a great set-up right off the bat.

Looking forward to some great suggestions!!

Tekin is great stuff. Castle still has the sale going on for the 1512 1800kv motor for $60. At the price, you really can't beat it.

Lots of people have been going with the Castle/MMP setup. A used MMP can be had for pretty cheap, so less than $200 for a good setup.

Keep in mind, the Tekin is sensored. I believe it to be a benefit, but with the quality of motors these days, the difference between sensored and sensorless may be considered negligible by most.

*I'm assuming you'll be running 4s.

Best combo? It all depends
No, seriously: do you want to run 4S/5S/6S LiPo?

Personally I found Tekin 1900Kv a bit slow on 4S. I prefer 2200Kv (Tekno) on 4S, but there are as many opinions as readers probably.

Wouldn't proper gearing solve the problem? I would imagine going with a bigger pinion.

hmmm.........Josh Wheeler is local and he runs rx8 with 1900kv on 4s and its stupid/ballistic fast! I ran a rx8 with 1700kv Tekin motor and it was too fast for me.

Tekin Hands Down!

I was thinking 1900 because the 1700 doesn't have quite enough "umph" (for me), but anything bigger than the 1900 is going to drain my battery a little too quickly....at least this is what I understand from some users of these set-ups.

If you go 1700kv, use 5s and proper gearing. It'll give you plenty of power and run efficiently.

I tried 1900 with higher gearing, but it was too weak for me. But that is personal taste...

You, sir, are an animal and an inspiration if a 1900kv on 4s is too slow...!

I've personally ran the RX8 paired with a 2050 and 1900 in buggy and they both hauled the mail. I geared the 1900 up in my RC8 (20t pinion) and it did everything I needed it to without getting overly worked up about it, i.e. stayed nice and cool even in the deep south summer's! TEKIN all the way.

Personally I prefer Tekin combo, I've both 1900 and 2050. last week I was the fastest guy on the straight, and there was also a castle mmm with 2650kv on 4s...if you think Tekin aren't fast enough probably you are undergeared, I change from 14T to 15 on my mp9e with 2050, wow... A small change but the car literally flies away!!!
