Region 5 Off-Road Champs - Electric

2004 Region 5 Off-Road Electric Championships will be held September 10, 11 & 12 in Litchfield, MI. Litchfield is located 12 miles north of Indiana, just a few miles from I-69. It's a 3 hour drive from Chicago, 2.5 hours from Indy, 2 hours from Detroit, 1.5 miles from Lansing and just 4 hours from Cleveland. There are plenty of good off-road racers that live close that this should be the biggest Off-Road race that this area has seen in a number of years.

The host track is experienced at large race crowds. Annual MARS race hosts 250 to 300 racers every year. We will limit the Region 5 entries to the first 250. Pre-entry deadline is September 3rd. The entry fee is only $35 for each class. At that low price, this should fill up fast.

Track surface is a perfect mix of black, top soil and clay. Step pin tires work well on wet surface as the top 1/8th inch stays loose and provides high bite traction. As the surface dries IFMAR pins or a similar medium size pin tire works well. Most racers like Silver or M3 compound tires. Track is 120 feet by 80 feet. Driver’s stand is 8 feet high and shaded. Track layout is more motocross than super speedway.

Flyers will be available soon at http://www.fantomracing.com/ or you can request one via e-mail at [email protected]

Q's that have come up - most or all is on the flyer, but in case you haven't got one yet (only been out a few days) here's some more format info.

Four round of IFMAR qualifying, then mains for all participants.
Five minute races, two minute grid time between. AMB scoring - personal transponders allowed - club transponders available.
Friday schedule: 9am to 9pm racer check in and open practice with groom sessions every two hours.
Saturday schedule: 6:30 am to 8:30 am racer check in and open practice . 9am sharp begins first round. Three rounds on Saturday with resort at the end of 3rd.
Sunday schedule: 6:30 am to 8:30 am open practice . 9am sharp begins fourth round. Minimum 1/2 hour break before mains. Single A mains, run in class order, bottom up (not A's together). Trophies for top 3 in each class. Maybe top 10 in A depending on entries.
Classes: Masters Stock Truck, Stock Buggy, Stock Truck, Mod Buggy, Mod Truck and 4wd Mod. This is the tentative class order, depending on # of entries.
No handout motors - bring your own ROAR legal stockers. Motors will be teched in each race. It may be random (say car 5 for one race, 2 for the next 6, 7 & 8 next) but expect at least one motor to be looked at in each heat.
$35 each class. One free t-shirt per racer. $10 late fee for entries after 9/3. Limited to first 250 entries. We think we'll easily hit that number. We expect a good showing from Chicago, Cleveland, Indy and Columbus. There are a ton of top notch racers in Region 5.

Pre-entry due post marked by 9/3. $10 late entry fee after that. Only $35 per class. That's a huge bargain for a Regional.

The track is dry in these pics, but will be kept wet all weekend. It is the perfect mix of clay and top soil. Step pins work on wet and ifmar pins or other medium type pin works well on 90 degree hot day when the track begins to dry. We can usually keep the track from turning to dust on a hot day, so there isn't a shortage of traction. Fun track. We try hard to keep the ruts down too.

Let's race!

Change in the trophies. Dad has decided to give 10 trophies for all A-mains. Thanks to the help of the race sponsors, Ryder's Hobby Shop and Fantom Racing, the trophy fund will allow for some good tropies. All 10 in the A will get a nice trophy and top 3 in all mains.

ROAR memebership answers. You can join ROAR for $30 for one year. Or, you can join with a one race membership for the Regionals, at the track, for $15. If you then decide to go to another ROAR race within the next year, you can pay another $15 at that race. That would qualify you for a full membership for the rest of the year.

If you don't plan to race any other ROAR events in a year, the $15 option is really great to be able to attend one big, fun race.

We are up to 75 entries. You can still sign up at the track on Friday, 9/10 or Saturday morning 9/11. ROAR tells us that they usually see about 25% of the entries sign up at the race. If that happens we will be at 100 or more. I have talked to a few racers who wanted to "wait and see" how many entries there were before signing up for two or three classes. The concern was time working on multiple vehicles. We will space things out if the attendance is smaller, so don't worry too much about that. I can gladly take more time in the rounds grooming.

Should be a fun weekend of racing. With trophies now for the top 10 in each A main and trophies for the top three in all other mains, there is a pretty good chance at winning a Regional's trophy.
