For an 8 year old it shouldn't matter... AE/Kyosho both are solid trucks. Your main concern should be parts support locally. Actually parts support really isn't an issue but it does save having to order odd parts online if he breaks something. My 8 year old drives my SC10, I bought an extra body and let him choose the paint. It's full RPM and New Era chassis brace, it's been solid. He broke the steering bell crank by hitting a post but other then that it's been very durable. I've had it a year and can count on 1 hand how much stuff I've busted.

Get him a Slash, easy on the wallet and pretty durable. Just wait on lipos, run the six cells.
With how the cost of lipos have dropped over the past year, I would not put any money into nimh. To be honest I have a seven year old running a slash and blitz for a year and half now and he is doing quite well. Everyone thinks because they are affordable they are a great beginner vehicle. For a beginner driver I think they are the worst thing that could have come out. Very little traction and limited setup features. If I did it all over again, I would have started him straight out with some kind of 4wd. Something with better traction is much easier for a new person to drive. Money was not mine concern.

Good point... My only issue with Lipo's and kids is more of a safety issue. While I have never had an issue with Lipo's I wouldn't let me kids charge them. To easy for them to get one of the options on the charger wrong.

My kids are very electronic savvy but I still don't feel comfortable letting them dink with them. As they get a little older and spend more time using them and watching me it will be a non-issue. NIMH packs are cheap and while they can also come with a safety hazard I used them at that age without incident.

Personally I hate Slash's... but setting my personal preference aside I think it's a good vehicle to bash and bang around until they learn how to control them. 4wd doesn't really matter, they still smash into stuff. Here is an example... My 5 year old driving my DB-01.

I would definitely give him the Slash 4x4 and get yourself something..... if you want to stick with short course, a SC8-E. Myself I went to a buggy.

This winter the Slash and buggy are going to the wayside for a couple of truggy's. Namely the Hyper TT and hopefully (if available) a RC8-TE.
