My 2 wd Slash loves to munch spur gears
#17
It's setup 16/90 right now. I wish TRX would've come up w/somthing more durable in their Slash: 4 or 5 runs w/4600 is crazy. I'm buying spur gears by the 6 pack when I could be buying Pepsi's! It generally runs about 160 or so w/90t and w/86t the thing cooks in the 190's.

What they missed with all the Magnum 2.72 trans cars is keeping the SRT trans. If they would have carried that over they would be fine. Go get the new lay shaft for the AE sliper. You will love it.

you may want to check out the top shaft in the transmission. my old slash ate a couple spurs so i took the trans apart and rebuilt it. Seems that there was a little slop in the top shaft. I am not certain what i did differently when i rebuilt it but it solved my problem and never killed another spur gear again. kinda miss that truck actually,.

Stripping spurs is a symptom. You need to find the cause and fix it. Using a steel spur will just mask the problem temporarily and it will just come back later and eat up your $30 spur rather than your $4 one.
I'd replace the pinion just in case it is defective, since it's a relatively cheap part. Double check your motor mesh and check it and motor mount screws after each run.
Considering locktiting (sparingly, as to not get too much in the motor) your motor mount screws and possibly using some larger washers to get more surface area and friction and therefore less prone to sliding.

The Robinson pinions that come in the economy six packs are among the softest steel pinions available. Only the Traxxas OEM Slash pinion is softer.
That explains your problem with eating spur gears. Once the pinion starts to wear, the teeth becopme sharper and sharper until they are knife edged. Any new spur you put on will get chewed up quickly.
I have seen this on Slashes owned by many people. I tell everyone the same thing: Get a Losi pinion.
Losi pinions are the hardest steel pinions I have found. They are heat treated and are harder than most files. I have run the same Losi pinion on my Slash for over two years and only changed the spur gear a few months ago. No matter how much grit gets embedded in the spur, it will not wear out a Losi pinion (unless you are running in Diamond Dust ).
