I thought my Reddy 3300 was too hot too. I bought a temp gun and it was 150-160F. If you can hold you thumb on it for more than a second it's less than 150F.

BTW: I got a Raytek for $22 shipped of ebay. There are a few hobby manufacturers that have cheap ones available too.

Chris whats your gearing. I am going to be running the 3300kv that comes with the brushless rtr. I heard at 18t its undergeared and thats how it seems to me. I was thinking of going all the way up to 22 based on a post I read somewhere on here.

I run 22/87 most of the time. I bash on the street for 20 minutes (~3000ma) with my son and it gets up to about 160F. I ran on a track and it was getting pretty hot, but I didn't have a temp gauge at the time so I can't tell you how hot. I'd say 20-22/87 is the right range.

16/87 runs decent for me with a 10.5T motor in cooler weather, still a bit hot in hot weater. It was WAAAAAAAAAY too hot with a 22 tooth. I wonder why everybody is varying so much with their gearing? Different motors and ESCs must really measure out different in heat output.

Rig and Electronics; SC10 with Novak Havok 3s esc, Novak Ballistic 8.5r motor, Venom 5000Mah 2s lipo 30c, 16 tooth pinion, stock spur, Jc Rulux wheels, Jc Goosebump tires, gear diff (ball diff really not recomended on this track), dogbone axles, I don't know what else to say any input will be much appreciated.
I have a sc10 with navak gtb and ballistic 10.5 and I am running a 19/84 and it is grey temps coming off after a 4 min race. Try something around there.

all the regulars and even the owner at the track said the ball diff was great till the main then it need adjusting and they said they had rebuild them every weekend. the only way to run a ball was to keep 2 with so you could switch to a fresh prepped one after the heat races and would almost instantaniuosly fail in the middle of your main event regularly. everyone says gear diff with black grease. when the owner of the business says dont buy this you wont be happy "I don't want your money that bad". I'll listen.

update.I just took everything apart. this motor looks like its going to be toast, or need a serious rebuild. I was alot harder on it than I thought last night, shouldn't have been chasing down that damn slash 4x4.

I just bought my son the brushless SC10 and I have to say I was surprised at how good the Reedy motor and XP ESC is. I bought the kit earlier this year and put a Castle Sidewinder 5700 combo in it. While not quite as fast on the top end as my car the brushless SC10 smokes it off the line. I can see it being able to go up a few teeth, it shreads the tires with stock gearing and a good 7.2 battery. The SC10 brushless is a good deal.

all this gearing talk is kind of a mute point....
every track is going to be different so the gearing that is ideal for the motor is going to be different. even tires will play a huge role in this as the diameters are different, even traction level will play a roll, not to mention drag brake and regular braking.

also remember that you do not gear the motor to the track, you gear your motor by assessing the temp of it. use a gearing chart online and talk with locals at your specific track, they can be of great help to you!

Default SC10 gearing

Ditto that on checking a gearing chart.

Here's a good one to look at for starters.

http://www.comeseethis.com/gearing/Default.aspx

I used this for setting up my B4 when I still had it and also my SC10.

I'm currently running the Havoc3s with Ballistic 8.5 with 20/81 gearing in my SC10 and it runs warm to the touch. All depends on the ambient temperature and how hard you run it. I'm also only running 3800 Mah Nimh packs, so that I believe is part of the reason it runs a lil cooler.
