Default Vxl-3m esc on stampede

Is i possible to run the vxl-3m esc on the stampede instead of the 3s because the 3m is rated for 12 cells nimh (2 six-cell) and the 3s is only rated for 9 cells need velineon because I want waterproof.

No you can't as the vxl-3m is for smaller cars (1/16 & smaller) also the vxl3s can one battery. It take up to 9.6v (8 cell) nimh and 2 and 3 cell lipos (7.4v & 11.1v)

But why does it matter if the esc is meant for smaller cars wont it still work since it is only electronics.

The smaller esc won't be able to handle the amp draw associated with the bigger (heavier) cars. The internal electronic components are not designed to carrty the higher currents.
