Default Why do my lipos get so hot easily???

I am running a novak 5.5r and a LRP comp in my slash 4x4 with the stock 13T pinion, it seems like my lipos got so hot after a complete run. Anyone knows what's wrong with it??

Thanks.

You need to link your lipos or at least give us the specs of the batteries to help you out too.

I m running the thunder power 5000 40C, Orion 3800 25C and SMC 5200 24C, SMC 5000 28C and Orion 3200 20C. All those lipos went hot after some runs and complete runs. I m wondering if i m under gearing or over gearing on my slash. If I m running the stock 13T pinion on the 4X4, and i want more high speed, how many turns of motor should i set with it....? Thanks.

Go read on Novaks or any other speed control/motor companies web sites.

They all say to run high quality batteries because of the power being drawn from the batteries while running.

From Novak's site:

Due to the growing popularity of Li-Po battery packs, we have received many questions concerning our electronics’ compatibility and performance when used with Li-Po batteries. Click here are a few troubleshooting suggestions when using Li-Pos.

Batteries that are rated at 25C or lower, generally, cannot sustain their voltage under load, causing a vehicle’s electronics, such as the ESC and receiver, to drop out intermittently.

86 spur? You mean 54/13? I'm using the CC2650 and MMM at 54/18 with no heat issues no where on 2s 30c 5000mah Zippies.

I don't know if it'll matter with your lipos but that 540 5.5 will not last in the 4x4 slash. Just a heads up. Yes I know the stock motor for the 4x4 is a 540 can, but I've melted 2 novak 540's in my old 4x4 slash.
Sorry if I hijacked your thread.

54/13 should be fine under normal conditions. ( I think anyways )

Thanks for the heads up, i have the same feeling too, that 540 wont last too long, so which motor would you suggest on the 4x4 slash, i would like to keep using the lrp sphere comp...... Thanks.

Hello,

As stated above, the load placed on the the motor and batteries in a 4x4 slash is very high, I have scene times running a 5.5 turn even in a 2 wheel drive slash hard to keep the motor and battery temps in check. By the time you get the gearing low enough to keep things cooled off you may not get the the top speed you are looking for. This is why they have come out with the 550 size motors because they are much more efficient and provide the extra TQ needed to get these high load vehicles moving.

It is possible you are exceeding over 100Amps of load at times which will heat a lipo up with that motor combination.

On your Orion Pack it has a burst rating of only 64 Amps which means your are overloading the batteries substantially with this combination.

Your 5000 Pack can handle a burst of 200 Amps but still the sustained amp draw of your combination may still heat up the battery, as long as you are not exceeding 140 Degrees the battery should be ok but I would not push the smaller C rated packs that hard!

Good luck and gear down a bit to get the heat down a bit more.

i believe the 13T is the lowest i can find in the market.... so i shouldnt be using the 5.5 turn at all?

5.5T is fine, its the 540 can thats an issue. Look at Novak or Trinity for a 550 can. They're between $99-125.00

You can go as low as a 9 tooth pinion, but you'll hate it. Try an 11 and if its still hot, see if you can get your hands on a 550
