Default Nanotech?

Hey,

So I've been hearing people talk about nanotech lipos, what exactly is the difference between them and regular lipos? Are they better in some way?

I was wondering this myself.

Are they really special? And how would they stack up to a proven lipo like a Thunderpower 50C for example?

Hyperion and Thunderpower have been using this nano tech for some time and there may be others - basically 'nano' refers to the particle size of one of the lipo media components. At this small uniform size, lipo performace is increased in several diff ways - lower IR, increased C rating and increased C charge rates. Any of the 5C+ capable lipos are (and have been) all using it and HK/HC is just catching up. Since they adopted the name, it looks new, and like they're the only ones using it, but its not.

Here's a snip from an older Hyperion page that mentions its use in their line of G3 lipos -

"BACKGROUND

The G3 packs were the first to introduce the new Hybrid RS (rolled/stacked) construction technology, super-fine "nano" substrate materials, and an extremely rigorous Quality Control and cell matching process, in order to guarantee you not only superb performance, but also very tightly balanced and long-lasting packs. No other brand has yet exceeded our specifications - regardless of their marketing claims - nor value pricing. Hyperion makes a point of bringing the best to market, at the lowest possible pricing for you.

G3 deliver the highest voltage and flattest discharge curves under load, which makes them the best performer you can buy. And tests have shown that at the 70%-discharged point in flight, they are delivering as much as 40% more power than previous generation LiPo.

The fact that they can be safely charged at up to 6C rates with absolutely no negative impact on lifespan - for charge times as low as 10 to 12 minutes - is just icing on a very tasty cake. (G3 have been certified for 6C without cycle decrease. However, charge time difference between 6C and 5C is negligible (or often zero) due to CC/CV curves, so we believe 5C to be the ideal fast-charge setting for quality Lipo)."

Very good! Thank you for the info.

I was thinkin it was odd that Turnigy would be using a new chemistry before any of the other major players...

No, it's not a typo. It's not for all their packs though. Thing is, most chargers can't handle a 10C charge rate even if you wanted to.

a 50 amp charge would be extreme! or even better, a 6000mAh pack would be 60amps!! maybe it could be plugged in to a wall socket?

but hay, at least with these new packs, if you need to fully charge in less than 5 minutes, you can

FWIW guy doing testing for Hyperion that posts on RC Groups said at 6C his Hyperion lipos are charged in 12min. At 8C, charge time down to ~9.5min.

I guess gone are the days of plugging in a 7.2V nicd to a slow charger and leaving it on overnight and waking up to a fully charged battery

I have two of the turnigy nanotechs (45/90c 5000mah) in my 8ight-T. They work great so far. Lots of punch and run time, they fit the battery tray perfectly.

If my Ve8 battery tray wasn't so short I'd give one of these Nano-Techs a go.
