I suggest you post your current setup: motor/esc and gearing so that you can get the help your asking for.
Also are you a racer/ basher? on road/ off road? if you explain the situation it will make it far easier to offer a solution.

just my opinion of course and only trying to help.

Not trying to come off as a jerk or anything, but if you are going through that many speed controls you are doing somthing wrong. Post up what you are running, then we can help.

Are you running the VXL or XL-5 system? Their speed controls are very good, especially the XL-5, so you are doing something wrong. Need more info in order to help.
  1. Gearing
  2. Track/road conditions it is being driven on
  3. What type of battery

Is your ESC still mounted high on the shock tower. I remember some new racers at the track killing their ESC by landing upside down and wacking the wires and top of the Esc. Throwing alot of shock into the board and poof.

Also check the wire connections. Move the ESc down onto the chassis if it fits. You may need to solder new wires to pull that off. I love the XL5 esc.

I would have to say its the motor and the gearing. the xl5 can handle down to a 12 turn motor that is a 550 size (titan) and down to a 15 turn motor that is 540 size. the speed gems nitronite motor is a 12 turn 540 size. and a 29 tooth pinion with a 86 tooth spur is way to high.

According to your post your running a speed gems nitronite:

And your running a Traxxas XL5 ESC:

This seems to be a problem because your running a brushless motor on a brushed ESC...

double check what your running dude, also the XL5 and most ESC's have a motor limit, if you exceed the motor limit your ESC goes poof which is more than likely your problem

very true but there is also a brushed version of the speed gems line which is what is probably being used. either way its definatly a improperly matched motor and esc combined with incorect gearing.

If its a brushed motor you want than a 15T would work fine, any lower and it will most likely over heat easily. For gearing an 86 tooth spur gear and a 13 tooth pinion work well for me with a 15T motor and the stock XL5 ESC.
